First impressions are everything — except when they’re not. While most sitcoms that struggle in their first season get the ax, there have been occasions when a network is so invested in the success of a star or a concept that they give it another shot after retooling things. Sometimes they ditch a few characters or switch the location; other times they go so far as to change the name of the show. Then they put it back out into the world and hope everyone forgets about the original incarnation.
Here are seven such shows that were retooled after (or during) their first season, with notably mixed results…
7 Ellen
Ellen DeGeneres’ mid-1990s ABC sitcom was a modest success. Its first season, though, was very different from those that would follow. For starters, it was called These Friends of Mine instead of Ellen. And a couple of those friends (played...

Recasting happens all the time. Tragedy sometimes strikes, like in the case of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" series, where Michael Gambon assumed the role following the passing of the original performer, Richard Harris. Oftentimes, recasting is a result of scheduling conflicts, like when "May December" breakout star Charles Melton took over the role of Reggie Mantle on "Riverdale" due to original actor Ross Butler's scheduling conflicts with "13 Reasons Why." And sometimes a character is recast simply because they weren't right for the role, as was famously the case with Eric Stoltz, who was replaced by Michael J. Fox after six weeks of shooting "Back to the Future."
In all of these instances, fans were well aware of the recastings as they happened, but once a person has been playing a role long enough, audiences sometimes forget they were ever recast in the first place. This...

The eight-episode series follows an aristocrat, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, who spends decades banished to an attic hotel room following the October Revolution after being sentenced to house arrest by a Bolshevik tribunal. Based on the 2016 novel by Amor Towles, the series was written by Ben Vanstone, who also serves as the executive producer and showrunner, and whose pilot episode titled “A Master of Circumstance” is submitted for consideration. The same episode will represent Sam Miller in the directing race, who has previously landed three Emmy bids: one for “Luther” in 2012 and two “I May Destroy You” in 2021.
The series received solid reviews from critics and boasted an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Alf is coming back to life. Ryan Reynolds has revived the ‘80s sitcom character for his Maximum Effort Channel, an offshoot of his advertising and marketing agency. Past episodes of the NBC sitcom will stream on the new channel and viewers will see new sponsored segments, called Maximum Moments, featuring the furry alien during the episodes.
Starring Paul Fusco, Max Wright, Anne Schedeen, Andrea Elson, and Benji Gregory, the 1986-90 series follows an alien life form (aka Alf) from Melmac who crash lands on Earth and lives with a suburban family. Following the cancellation, the outspoken cat-chasing alien (brought to life by puppeteer Fusco) has returned in a TV movie, a TV Land talk show, and various cameos.

Hide your cats and prepare for snarky observations about the human race because Alf is back, baby! Thanks to Fubo, Canadian darling Ryan Reynolds is reviving the classic comedy series for his Maximum Effort channel! The Alf Marathon begins this Saturday, July 29, via the channel’s inaugural series of “Maximum Moments.” Alf creator Paul Fusco and Shout! Studios are along for the wild ride, with sponsored content coming from Mint Mobile, Fubo, Hims, Mntn, and Ring featuring the wise-cracking, feline-terrifying alien himself, Alf!
“At Maximum Effort, we love taking risks and blurring the lines between shows and sponsorship because we believe both can be equally entertaining,” said Reynolds, Maximum Effort co-founder. “Besides my irrational love of Alf growing up, one of the reasons we licensed this show was precisely because Paul, Shout! Studios and our intrepid brand partners wanted to plot with us to bring Alf back to life. Tune in this Caturday!

The NBC comedy Alf may have been something that could only happen in the ‘80s. Alf, short for Alien Life Form, was a puppet with the voice of creator Paul Fusco. His Melmac name was Gordon Shumway. Anyway, the idea of building a family sitcom around a stuffed character is something they probably wouldn’t do today. But, if you grew up on Alf or just discovered it on Peacock, Freevee, Shout TV, Crackle, Tubi, Vudu, Fubo or Roku Channel, there are a few other shows that deliver similarly oddball comedy.

Warren Beatty’s show is a beautiful, one of a kind epic. Never mind that it is sharply critical of John Reed, an American who was buried in the Kremlin — Hollywood never approached the title subject directly: (whisper) Commies. Beatty’s production idiosyncrasies raised eyebrows but his picture is quite an achievement in filmic storytelling, cleverly accessing a political scene sixty years gone through testimony by notables that lived it. Beatty and Diane Keaton provide the romantic fireworks that make the film commercially viable, amid all the revolutionary fervor and political chaos.

Norm Macdonald, the deadpan comedian, actor, writer and “Saturday Night Live” star, has died after a battle with cancer, Variety has confirmed. He was 61.
Macdonald privately battled the disease for almost a decade. “Norm was an original! He defined American humor with honesty and blunt force,” Jeff Danis, president of Dpn Talent and one of Macdonald’s reps, told Variety in a statement.
Dozens of comedians, including Seth Rogen, Jon Stewart, Ron Funches and Jim Gaffigan, paid tribute to Macdonald, “one of the greatest comedians to have ever lived,” on social media.
The comedian got his start in showbiz as a writer on “Roseanne” in 1992 after making rounds at comedy clubs in Canada. I recently had a chance to see a new indie sci-fi film called Time Trap. The movie currently has a limited theatrical release and if it’s playing at a theater near you it’s definitely worth checking out!
The movie has a fascinating, unique, and innovative concept and it was executed really well! The movie was made on a low-budget and it may be a little rough around the edges, but for the most part it’s an awesome movie that I recommend checking out.
It has a smart mind-bending story that follows a group of students who become trapped inside a mysterious cave where they discover time passes differently. The story has some fun playing with the space-time continuum.
The concept is actually pretty terrifying in certain ways. Here’s the synopsis:

The original series, created by Tom Patchett and Paul Fusco, centered on a small, furry, arrogant extraterrestrial from the planet Melmac who’s taken in by an average American family. Warner Bros. Television is in the early stages of developing a reboot of the classic sitcom “Alf,” Variety has confirmed with sources.
No writer is yet attached to the project, which would again explore the misadventures of the titular, cat-eating Alf–which stands for Alien Life Form. In the original series, Alf of the planet Melmac crash lands in the suburbs and takes up residence with the middle class Tanner family. The show aired from 1986-1990 for four seasons and over 100 episodes on NBC. The series has remained a part of the pop culture landscape long after it ended and is frequently referenced in other shows and films.
One idea that has reportedly been discussed for the reboot would involve Alf emerging from Area 51–where he has been held captive since the original series finale–and observing how much the world has changed since that time.

Chicago – December 9th is the 2014 second season premiere of “Ground Floor,” the TBS workplace comedy featuring John C. McGinley (“Scrubs”), plus Skylar Astin and Briga Heelan (seen in the film “Pitch Perfect”). Chicago native Cindy Caponera is a writer and co-executive producer on the show.
In a variation on the “Slobs versus the Snobs” scenario, “Ground Floor” is set in a financial company that features a romance between an occupant of the upper floors – where the master-of-the-universe financial consultants hold court – and a worker on the “ground floor,” where the operations and maintenance crew resides. A big part of the hilarity is provided by John C. McGinley, playing a mentor character as in “Scrubs,” but in a softer and gently funny way. The chemistry between the featured couple, portrayed by Astin and Heelan, provides the conflict between the two parts of the company.

Hollywood continues to mine old '80s properties for 21st century reboots, even the most all-but-forgotten franchises such as "Alf," according to Heat Vision.
"Alf" (which stands for Alien Life Form, as explained by Max Wright's Willie Tanner in the pilot episode) followed the adventures of a furry wisecracking alien who came to live with a suburban family after crash-landing into their garage.
While never anything resembling great television,"Alf" got by on the charm of puppeteer Paul Fusco, who was also the series co-creator with Tom Patchett. "The show ended up airing for four seasons from 1986-1990.
Now, Alf is going to crash-land into some other garage as the star of a live-action/CG hybrid, a la last summer's "The Smurfs." In fact, the "Alf" movie comes courtesy of producer Jordan Kerner, who helped bring the Smurfs to the big screen. Both Patchett and Fusco are involved as well,...

The 1986 alien sitcom Alf (Alien Life Form) will be coming to the big screen as a CGI animated live-action hybrid. Sony Pictures animation just acquired the rights to the property, and it will be produced by Jordan Kerner, who brought the wonderfully awful big screen adaptation of The Smurfs. Hopefully the Alf movie will be a much better film adaptation.
The story centers on a friendly furry alien creature, who crash lands on Earth and ends up shacking up with a suburban family named the Tanners. Of course he's being tracked down by the government as well. Alf is known for being a very sarcastic individual who loves to eat cats.
The original series creators Tom Patchett and Paul Fusco will also serve as producers on the film. Fusco was also the puppeteer and voice of Alf on the series. As of right now, there is no writer or director attached to the project.

Alf, the iconic American science fiction sitcom from the 1980's and 90's, is making the jump to the big screen with original voice actor and puppeteer Paul Fusco attached. The popular series followed Gordon Shumway, a friendly extraterrestrial nicknamed Alf (an acronym for Alien Life Form), who crash lands in the garage of the suburban middle-class family in Los Angeles, California. The Tanners, consisting of of social worker Willie (Max Wright), his wife Kate (Anne Schedeen), their teenage daughter Lynn (Andrea Elson), younger son Brian (Benji Gregory), and their cat Lucky -- who Alf constantly tries to eat -- are unsure what to do so they hide Alf in their home from their friends, neighbors and the Alien Task Force (part of the U.S. Air Force) until he can repair his spacecraft. On the run for 40 years, Wright's tale has what it takes for screen success. But such storytelling needs a conscientious approach
If the story of George Wright, the convicted murderer captured this week in Portugal after 40 years on the run, has not yet been optioned by an enterprising producer, then the film industry has really missed a trick. From a cinematic storytelling perspective, this tale has everything. Wright, who had participated in a spree of armed robberies, was imprisoned for the murder of the service station owner Walter Patterson in 1962, only to escape from the Bayside state prison farm in Leesburg, New Jersey, in 1970. Already you've got the heist movie and the prison break-out movie covered. That's a big market: expressed in mathematical terms the potential audience would be (fans of Bonnie and Clyde) + (fans of The Shawshank Redemption). And only a fool would rule out defenders of Buster.
But there's more.

One of the more memorable and unusual TV shows of the 1980s was Alf. It centers around an alien named Gordon Shumway from the doomed planet Melmac. He crash lands his spaceship into the California garage of the Tanner family, who nickname him Alf (Alien Life Form). The cast of the show includes Max Wright, Anne Schedeen, Andrea Elson, and Benji Gregory, with John Lamotta, Liz Sheridan, Anne Meara, and Paul Dooley. The series ran on NBC for four seasons and 102 episodes.
Alf kept the Tanners quite busy as he was constantly breaking things, trying to eat their cat, and just overall being obnoxious. Filming on the show was apparently a lot to handle as well.
The production details of the series were kept relatively secret during the show's production. Once the series finished airing, many in the cast and crew have conceded that the series was a technical nightmare...
