Came from a South Shields mining family.

Worked with young Daniel Craig in 1987-1988 as director of NYT in London.

Was Director of National Youth Theatre of Great Britain 1987-2004 and is now Director of Los Angeles Young Actors Company at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood.

At 16 he auditioned for Michael Croft to become a member of the National Youth Theatre. He played a variety of roles over 7 seasons before Croft invited him to star in the premier of Fuzz in London.

Now Artistic Director of the National Youth Theatre. whose members have included Timothy Dalton.Helen Mirren and Simon Ward.

Became known for playing Billy Seaton in the tv serial When the Boat Comes In.
