Half a century ago, Universal Pictures hoped to carry over the success of its entries in the short-lived disaster film vogue to naval combat movies, stirring some box office if few other rewards via dullish “Midway” and “Gray Lady Down,” which felt like bloated retro B-movies. Having revived the disaster genre with trilogy “The Wave,” “The Quake” and “The Burning Sea,” their Norwegian producers seem to be going the same route with “The Arctic Convoy,” about the perilous voyage of a freighter delivering supplies to Allies on the eastern front during World War 2.
The fact-inspired story’s central situation is compelling enough. But director/co-writer Henrik M. Dahlsbakken (of recent biopic “Munch”) delivers a middling effort too sparing of excitement to satisfy action fans, and without the character depth or involvement to score as drama instead. New month, new recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. The second installment of 2024 features selections reflecting holidays, events or traditions of February.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s horror offerings include reincarnation, vampires and more.
The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975)
Pictured: Michael Sarrazin and Jennifer O’Neill in The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.
Directed by J. Lee Thompson.
Author Max Ehrlich handled the screenplay for his own novel’s adaptation. Despite its quirky title, though, this movie is a rather surreal and sad, not to mention unpredictable viewing experience. The obsession with metaphysical matters seeped into ’70s cinema, and this trippy psycho-horror gem, one directed by J. Lee Thompson, is a valid reflection of that bygone trend.

His December 28 death was announced by daughter Jenny Raucher, who was by his side when he passed.
Subsequently adapted by Raucher into an international best-selling novel, 1971’s Summer of ’42 was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Original Screenplay. Yesterday we shared the news of the three-disc special edition 4K release Severin Films is planning for the 1981 film Nightmare, a.k.a. Nightmares in a Damaged Brain. Now we have another awesome Severin Films release to let you know about, as they will be giving legendary director Lucio Fulci‘s 1977 film The Psychic a four-disc special edition 4K release!
Described as Fulci’s “ultimate giallo masterpiece”, The Psychic was scripted by Fulci, Roberto Gianviti, and Dardano Sacchetti, and is also known as Seven Notes in Black or Murder to the Tune of the Seven Black Notes. Apparently Quentin Tarantino entertained the idea of remaking the film with Bridget Fonda in the lead role back in the ’90s. Fulci’s film stars Jennifer O’Neill (Scanners) as a woman tormented by violent visions of past slayings. Or are they premonitions of murders still to come?

Now considered one of the biggest male revues in the world, Chippendales has a surprisingly dark past, including arson and murder, that is revisited in “Welcome to Chippendales“. Most noted for its troubled production background, this hospital-set murder thriller turns a doctor into a detective: James Coburn’s medico undertakes an amateur investigation of a crime involving an illegal abortion, and the cover-up thereof. Although tangled up in the crazy James Aubrey-Kirk Kerkorian regime at MGM, Blake Edwards’ film can boast a strong supporting cast: Jennifer O’Neill, Pat Hingle, Elizabeth Allan, Dan O’Herlihy, James Hong, Michael Blodgett, Regis Toomey and John Hillerman.

The Warner Archive has released the 1972 MGM thriller The Carey Treatment on Blu-ray. James Coburn has one of his best roles as Dr. Peter Carey, a rebellious but esteemed pathologist who moves to Boston to take a prominent position at one of the city's most highly regarded hospitals. The charismatic Carey loses no time in gaining friends, alienating top brass and bedding the comely chief dietician (Jennifer O'Neill). However, he soon finds himself embroiled in a politically volatile investigation when a fellow surgeon is arrested for performing an illegal abortion on the 15 year-old daughter of the hospital's crusty administrator (Dan O'Herlihy). (The movie was released a year before the landmark Roe V. Wade decision that legalized abortion in America and now appears to be on the verge of being reversed.) Coburn believes his friend's protestations of innocence and decides to launch his own investigation into the matter.

Jennifer O’Neill stars as a fabulously dressed clairvoyant in Fulci’s revived 1977 thriller that looks amazing, even if the sexual politics are dodgy
Italian director Lucio Fulci’s dusty giallo thriller from 1977 – also known as Murder to the Tune of the Seven Black Notes – has been retrieved from the shelf of some rights holder’s back catalogue and spruced up for rerelease. That gives us all a chance to appreciate, either anew or for the first time, its glorious deployment of tacky camera zooms, lurid colours and dubbed dialogue – the latter being a particularly evocative hallmark of 1970s Italian cinema, just a fraction out of sync with the actors’ lip movements. And like many other so-called classics from the giallo cupboard, the script is cheesy tosh with a nasty taste for violence against women; you have to put it down as par for the course given the time it was made.

This article contains spoilers for the ending of Scanners.
Scanners was the fifth commercially released feature film (and seventh overall) directed by David Cronenberg, the independent Canadian auteur who initially made a name for himself as a director of visceral, provocative horror films such as Shivers, Rabid, and The Brood. Released 40 years ago on January 14, 1981, Scanners was a turning point for Cronenberg in many ways: it edged away from the sexually tinged “body horror” of his first few films and into the realms of sci-fi, action, and conspiracy thriller, while adding advanced visual effects and an overall polish to the director’s clinical esthetic.
Although none of his films up to that point had achieved any sort of mainstream success outside Canada, Scanners was a breakthrough for Cronenberg: his most expensive film to date (with a budget of $4 million), it was his first to also earn decent money in the lucrative North American market.

Luchino Visconti’s handsome final feature adapts a classic Italian novel about an arrogant aristocrat whose selfish double-standard philosophy causes ruin and misery. The 19th century villas and ornate costumes dazzle, but the depressingly fated story will be tough going for sensitive audiences. This new disc encoding highlights the intoxicating atmosphere, and the intense performances of Giancarlo Giannini, Laura Antonelli and Jennifer O’Neill.

Their words laid out in court documents were full of vitriol, but Lady Gaga has settled the lawsuit filed by her former assistant.
Back in 2011, Jennifer O'Neill claimed she worked 7,168 hours of overtime between 2009 and 2011 and her former employer owed her at least $393,000.
In response, the "Applause" singer called herself the "Queen of the Universe" and accused her assistant of wearing her clothes and using her Yves Saint Laurent discount without her permission.
Details of the settlement are undisclosed, but the 27-year-old songstress is focused on other things, having just released "Do What U Want" off of her upcoming album, Artpop.

Robert Pattinson as Eric Packer, Cosmopolis Robert Pattinson's multibillionaire Eric Packer doesn't go on and on about wanting a haircut in this new Cosmopolis trailer — yes, another new Cosmopolis trailer. (Please scroll down.) This a more philosophical trailer, with cosmic statements such as "I smell sex all over you." Pattinson's reaction to that is priceless. And are they watching snuff films (minus the sex) at one point? [Check out another Cosmopolis trailer.] Now, this latest Cosmopolis trailer also offers a better look at the various supporting actors in the film. The English Patient / Hidden's Juliette Binoche looks particularly impressive. Cronenberg co-wrote the Cosmopolis screenplay with Don DeLillo, the author of the novel on which the film is based. In addition to Pattinson and Binoche, Cosmopolis features A Dangerous Method's Sarah Gadon, Sideways / Cinderella Man's Paul Giamatti, Sweet and Lowdown / In America's Samantha Morton, Resident Evil: Retribution / I Am Number Four's Kevin Durand,...

What would any of us become, especially if we can't get the haircut we want? Lady Gaga's former personal assistant is claiming the popstar was a nightmare to work for and regularily made diva-like demands -- how shocking.
The New York Post reports that Jennifer O'Neill worked for the 25-year-old popstar for 13 months and now claims she is owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid overtime.
O'Neill alleges that for $75,000-a-year she had to cater to Gaga's every whim at any hour of the day or night. According to court papers, O'Neill was responsible for "ensuring the promptness of a towel following a shower and serving as a personal alarm clock to keep [Gaga] on schedule."
That sounds like fairly standard expectations for a celebrity's personal assistant, but O'Neill, 41, also claims in the lawsuit that there was no breaks for meals "or, at times even sleep," claiming that she had to be on hand for "spontaneous, random matters in the middle of the night.

A former personal assistant to Lady Gaga claims the singer has lived up to her album title of Fame Monster. Jennifer O'Neill has filed a lawsuit seeking nearly $380,000 from Gaga's touring company for 7,168 hours of unpaid overtime racked up while being at the entertainer's beck-and-call in late 2009 and most of 2010. Describing Gaga as a nightmare boss, O'Neill claims her duties required everything from acting as a "personal alarm clock" to "ensuring the promptness of a towel following a shower." The lawsuit was filed Dec. 14 in Manhattan federal court. Reps for Gaga say the action is "completely without merit," CNN reports.
