Served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He became a recipient of the Purple Heart, when his plane was shot down over France.
Was heavily involved in sports prior to his movie career, as a professional player in the Canadian Football League and as bullpen coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team.
