It is everyone’s favorite time of year! Shark Week is finally here and Discovery has put together a spectacular line-up on shark-fueled specials that we can’t wait to sink our teeth into this summer!
We had the amazing opportunity to catch up with Marine Biologist Tom “Blowfish” Hird to discuss his two Discovery Shark Week specials, “Cocaine Sharks” and “Great White Fight Club”! It was a fascinating chat with Hird, as we dive into some of the story behind “Cocaine Sharks” where Hird and his team study shark behavior patterns in the Florida Keys. It is an area where researchers believe that the ocean may become contaminated with cocaine due to increased drug smuggling in the region. First, we have “Cocaine Bear” and now “Cocaine Sharks”….uh, oh! It is definitely a fascinating topic to discuss.

Exclusive: CNN will broadcast the Shark Week documentary Great White Open Ocean on Saturday, July 30, marking the first time the channel has participated in Shark Week.
It comes almost four months after the merger was completed between Discovery, whose flagship cable channel carries Shark Week, and CNN parent WarnerMedia. CNN also has been promoting Discovery Channel’s Shark Week on-air and online this year in a synergy move across Warner Bros. Discovery.
Great White Open Ocean is a 90-minute documentary featuring shark diving expert Jimi Partington. A year after almost dying in the jaws of a great white shark, Partington got back into the water to overcome the traumatic event, but the experience quickly became a battle for life and death. It was filmed by Shark Week filmmaker Jeff Kurr.
Shark Week returned to Discovery for its 34th year on July 24 with Dwayne Johnson as its first Master of Ceremonies.

Discovery Channel’s Shark Week returns Sunday night for its 34th year, and TheWrap has an exclusive sneak peek at an incredible moment from one of its most jaw-dropping programs — “Air Jaws: Top Guns.”
In the exclusive clip above, the “Air Jaws” team lured a shark with their fake seal decoy that trailed behind the boat, catching on film a legendary great white shark as it propelled itself out of the water, and performed a 360-degree (or nearly 360-degree) turn in the air, before diving back down with very little splash.
The objective for this year’s “Air Jaws” installment, from creator Jeff Kurr — the 22nd for the franchise — was to shoot the largest breaching great white shark ever captured on film
“I had the pleasure of, up until this year, filming the largest great white, which is this 15-foot humongous beast of a shark that came flying out of the water.

Shark Week concluded Saturday, and while, like in years past, this year’s 13 specials were all highly visual, music was equally integral. There’s essentially nothing but silence underwater, where much of the filming and action takes place, but musically, the specials are at the behest of the composers.
Michael Gatt, composer for Air Jaws: Fin of Fury, seized the opportunity. “What I love about Shark Week is that it’s a blank canvas,” Gatt says. “The sharks are actually quite dynamic as characters. They can be terrifying, but they’re also incredibly majestic, beautiful animals. Musically, we get to inform that emotion.

He’s worked on Shark Week for more than two decades, but veteran filmmaker Jeff Kurr still experiences firsts. In Lair of the Mega Shark (premieres Aug. 12 at 10 p.m. Et on Discovery), Kurr and fellow shark expert/cameraman Andy Casagrande head to New Zealand to investigate the sightings of a 20-foot great white. As Kurr watches on a monitor aboard the boat, Casagrande and colleague Kina Scollay take part in the first-ever cage dive at night in those waters—where aggressive sharks are known to work in tandem as a gang. As Shark Week begins Sunday, Aug. 10, so does viewers’ amazement at the titles of Discovery’s new specials. “We have brainstorm meetings for titles on every show, and I’m telling you, when a brainstorm meeting on the next car show comes up, you go to a conference room and there’s like four people in it,” Michael Sorensen, VP of development and production for the channel, says. “Anytime we have a Shark Week brainstorm for titles, you have to get more seats. It’s packed, people throwing out mash-ups: One of my favorites that came out of one of these meetings was Sharkcano.

Tonight marks the start of Shark Week’s 25th Anniversary, and Discovery wastes no time giving viewers what they want — the breaching great whites off South Africa’s Seal Island. The behavior was first shot in 2001, but Shark Week 2012 seeks two new angles: In Air Jaws Apocalypse (9 p.m. Et), filmmaker Jeff Kurr lies on a “seal sled” that tows a decoy seal 15 feet behind him in order to film an attack by 14-foot great white/badass Colossus at surface level. (You might recall in Ultimate Air Jaws, shark expect/photographer Chris Fallows used the sled, but he only shot with a still camera.

It's the 25th anniversary of Discovery Channel's Shark Week extravaganza, otherwise known as the best thing ever on television ever, ever, ever, forever. The event kicked off July 17, 1988, and this year, Discovery promises to be shark-ier than ever with "specials that get you so close to the action, if you were any closer you'd be bait!"
It all begins August 12 at 9 p.m. Est. Throughout the week, you can expect to see eight new specials. 2011's "Ultimate Air Jaws" gets a follow-up with "Air Jaws Apocalypse," in which shark expert Chris Fallows and producer Jeff Kurr explore Seal Island, South Africa, risking their lives for a close encounter with the 14-foot great white shark known as Colossus.
In "Shark Fight," victims of shark attacks discuss the terrifying moments of their confrontations. They've persevered after losing their limbs to sharks -- and now, these victims have actually dedicated their lives to protecting sharks.

Chris Fallows Producer Jeff Kurr
For the last 21 years, Jeff Kurr has been traveling the world chasing sharks. As a cinematographer and producer for Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week,” Kurr has swum with reef, bull and tiger sharks, but has a particular affinity for great whites. His newest documentary, “Great White Invasion” which premieres this week, explores why great whites are swimming closer to shore. Oh yeah, it’s super-terrifying, especially if you can’t stomach Jaws. It’s basically just like that, because a regular dude is paddleboarding, like, Right Next To A Shark!!! Fallows says it was safe because the shark’s body language illustrated that he wasn’t going to eat him like a bag of grapes. And he didn’t. Fallows lived through it, specifically for the purpose of showing us that, as long as you’re not bleeding,...

Jeff Kurr knows a thing or two about sharks.
During his two-plus decades with Discovery Channel's Shark Week, the La-based filmmaker has captured some of the most ground-breaking and dazzling footage of these feared creatures of the sea. This year, Kurr focuses his attention on the great white shark's return to our shallow waters and sandy beaches in "Great White Invasion."
To get psyched for Shark Week 2011, we sat down with Kurr to discuss all things cautious sharks, endangered sharks, and even a few frisky sharks.
What first motivated you to film sharks?
Well, very early on I thought, 'I'd really like to do that some day.' And lo and behold, through fate, luck, and being blessed, I had an opportunity to work on a Shark Week show way back in '91. It was pretty successful and I was offered another show, and another show, and here we...

Discovery kicks off its 24th annual Shark Week on Sunday, July 31, with the all-new special Great White Invasion (9 p.m. Et). It’s a fascinating examination of why great white sharks are swimming closer to shore in Southern California, Australia, and South Africa, and who’s really at risk — us or them. (Spoiler: It’s them.) Jeff Kurr, a filmmaker who’s been a part of Shark Week since 1991, noticed the phenomenon while shooting last year’s Ultimate Air Jaws special with wildlife photographer Chris Fallows. In Great White Invasion, Fallows wants to show people that great whites won’t...

Craig Ferguson’s love affair with the Discovery Channel goes beyond MythBusters. The Late Late Show host confirmed last night that he’ll be the host of Discovery’s 23rd Annual Shark Week, which kicks off August 1. “Slightly incontinent with excitement,” Ferguson wrote on Twitter yesterday, teasing the “big news” that would be revealed on-air last night (by Brian the shark puppet). Watch it below. Post-show, Ferguson added, “Watched Jaws on cable. Mistake. Hosting Shark Week now seems foolhardy. Sharks unaffected by sarcasm & self loathing. My only weapons.”
We’ve known for years that Shark Week is Ferguson’s “favorite holiday of the year.
