On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Old School Cool Fuels This Increasingly Odd Portrait of a Female Hot Rodder
[Editor’s Note: “Bury Me an Angel” is half of a two-part After Dark series spotlighting Barbara Peeters. If you can, check out “Humanoids from the Deep” first.]
Barbara Peeters is no prude. That’s maybe the biggest misconception worth clearing up for any cinematic spelunkers who know the infamous Roger Corman defector as the woman director who just could not make “Humanoids from the Deep” exploitative enough. (Did you read the sarcasm that was intended there? Good job.

We lost some beloved people during 2016.
All we can do now is honor their memories, remember what they brought to us through their talent and allow them to live on forever through their wonderful work.
1. In Memorium To all of the people who have entertained us on television throughout the years and ended their struggle this year, we honor you. 2. Pat Harrington, Jr. August 13, 1929 - January 6, 2016. Harrington is forever in our hearts as Schneider, the handyman from the apartment building on One Day at a Time from 1977-80, despite the fact his career was more far-reaching than that. 3. David Bowie January 8, 1947 - January 10, 2016. Bowie starred in movies such as Labyrinth and The Hunger, as well as TV shows Dream On and The Hunger, but it was his musical library that brought to live many scenes in both movies and on TV that will continue to remind us every day of Bowie's many talents.

Now there's something you don't see too often — an Emmy night that actually makes good television. The Emmys are usually one of those pop-culture Zen koans: Why is an award show for TV such a painful little hate-watch? But this year's model was easily the most entertaining Emmy bash since Conan O'Brien hosted in 2008, a welcome change after last year's debacle. Jimmy Kimmel kept things moving and got the whole event done and dusted in three hours — with a minute or two to spare, actually. Yes, there was still plenty...

Henry Winkler - the Fonz himself - introduced the emotional segment, honoring director and Happy Days creator Garry Marshall before a slideshow of names flickered across the screen."He was alive, he was a generosity of spirit and knowledge. I should know - he gave me my career. And I will tell you that anybody who was lucky enough to meet him, he changed their life," shared Winkler of Marshall, who died in July. [Guest author Christopher Lombardo of Really Awful Movies celebrates Canada Day by looking back at three backwoods Canadian horror films.] In the ’70s, Canadian tax loopholes spurred growth in domestic horror films, providing a more reliable low-cost means of recouping one’s investment in a frequently fickle business. A few, like Martin Scorsese’s favorite The Changeling, were critical darlings, while the bulk of them were regarded as cheap government-funded trash. A prominent Canadian critic famously called Cronenberg’s Shivers “an atrocity, a disgrace to everyone connected with it” in a jeremiad titled “You Should Know How Bad This Film Is. After All, You Paid for It.”
Luckily, for those of us invested in such things artistically if not financially (unless you count our tax dollars), we got gems such as Happy Birthday to Me, My Bloody Valentine, Black Christmas (1974), and many others.
The “tax shelter” era, in addition to straight-ahead slashers, also gave us lesser-known films that exposed class divisions—punishing urban interlopers who lacked the necessary survival skills to thrive in the wilderness.

The perfect film to watch in old-school 16mm!
Easy Rider (1969) is much more than a 60s relic – it’s still a great movie even today. I find it fascinating that Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda took Roger Corman material and gave it an European- influenced arthouse approach. Combined with breathtaking visuals, a well-chosen rock soundtrack and some classic, stoned, improvised dialogue Easy Rider is still an impressive movie all these years later. Fonda had recently made The Wild Angels, Hopper the less remembered The Glory Stompers, and Jack Nicholson Hells Angels On Wheels, but Easy Rider reinvented the biker movie (or technically created a new subgenre: the “hippy” Biker Film), and things were never...

'Broadcast News' with Albert Brooks and Holly Hunter: Glib TV news watch. '31 Days of Oscar': 'Broadcast News' slick but superficial critics pleaser (See previous post: “Phony 'A Beautiful Mind,' Unfairly Neglected 'Swing Shift': '31 Days of Oscar'.”) Heralded for its wit and incisiveness, James L. Brooks' multiple Oscar-nominated Broadcast News is everything the largely forgotten Swing Shift isn't: belabored, artificial, superficial. That's very disappointing considering Brooks' highly addictive Mary Tyler Moore television series (and its enjoyable spin-offs, Phyllis and Rhoda), but totally expected considering that three of screenwriter-director Brooks' five other feature films were Terms of Endearment, As Good as It Gets, and Spanglish. (I've yet to check out I'll Do Anything and the box office cataclysm How Do You Know starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Jack Nicholson.) Having said that, Albert Brooks (no relation to James L.; or to Mel Brooks...

Dan Haggerty, who found fame as Grizzly Adams, has died from cancer at age 74. Adams had been playing bit parts in films until he was cast as the title character in "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams", a 1974 low budget family film that went on to gross the (then) sizable sum of $45 million. The show was spun off as an NBC TV series a few years later. It lasted two seasons but made Haggerty synonymous with the role of a character who was loosely based on a real-life adventurer. Adams was a mountain man who encountered larger-than-life adventures. Although Haggerty continued to work fairly steadily in the ensuing years, he was relegated largely to low-budget and straight-to-video projects. Nevertheless, his name and that of Grizzly Adams remain pop culture icons of the 1970s. Click here for more. ...

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.
Kirsten (Julie Austin) and her two friends meet in the woods for the inaugural meeting of the Sisters of Anti-Christmas. The holiday is over commercialized and insincere, plus they got lame gifts last year and it doesn’t look like it’ll snow this year. As far as real problems, Kirsten’s home life is a mess. Her dad is dead, her mom (Deanna Lund) hates her with a fiery passion, little brother is a pervert and Grandpa might be a Nazi.

Every year during the Halloween season, I make a point of searching out at least one horror movie that I've never seen before. This year I started going through some horror movies from the 1980s, and as you might expect, a lot of them look like ridiculous yet entertaining flicks. Since Halloween is coming up, I thought it would be fun to make a list of some of these movies that I came across that I have never heard of before and ones that maybe you haven't seen before either. I included a short synopsis, poster, and trailer for each one. Make sure you watch the trailer because some of them are sure to make you laugh. I love these kinds of films!
Alone In the Dark - 1982

Easy Rider, meet Big Spender: The tricked-out, Captain America Harley-Davidson driven by Peter Fonda in that 1969 film is headed to the auction block on October 18th, and it's expected to secure a hefty price tag. According to The Associated Press, auction house Profiles in History estimates that the iconic American flag chopper will bring between $1 million and $1.2 million at the sale, which will be held online and at their galleries in Calabasas, California.

A year has passed, and another Texas Frightmare Weekend has come and gone! Last year Tfw expanded dramatically with a much larger location to become the Southwest's premier horror con. This year they proved that isn't going to change anytime soon.
This con is so hot that guests have begun just showing up without an invite. Veteran character actor Glenn Morshower ("Millennium", The Crazies 2010) popped up on Friday and was set up in the lobby until Saturday, when a table was located for him in the main room. He was swamped all weekend so it's a good thing he came!
The focus of the con (which ran May 3rd-5th) was originally "The Walking Dead," but with a few cancellations (almost all replaced with other guests, some from "Twd"), the star of the Weekend became Danny "Machete" Trejo, who was mobbed every time he was at his table. The presence...

I’ve been looking forward to Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan ever since I first heard about it, and it won’t be too much longer until we all get a chance to see what happens when a great American tall tale gets a monstrous slasher makeover.
Is it correct to call it a slasher? If the killer’s preferred instrument of death is an axe and the killer in question is a giant lumberjack, then wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call it a hacker? Eh, I’m over-thinking this.

Grizzly Adams Creator Dies
The Life And Times Of Grizzly Adams creator Charles E. Sellier Jr. has died. He was 67.
The producer passed away unexpectedly in his home near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on Monday. The cause of death has not been specified.
Sellier is best known for creating the character Grizzly Adams, a man accused of murder who befriends a bear while on the run from bounty hunters.
Adams, who was inspired by an actual 19th century trapper, was played by actor Dan Haggerty in the 1974 film The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams and the subsequent TV series of the same name.
Sellier also wrote and produced religious-based TV movies and documentaries, including In Search of Noah's Ark and Mark Twain's America.
He received an Emmy nomination in 1980 for TV movie The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

One horror flick that has me curious is Gary Jones' Bunyan, a reimagining of the tall tale of titanic lumberjack Paul Bunyan that brings his legend to bloody life as a 15-foot giant maniac with a very large ax. Producer Jeff Miller was kind enough to send over some news stills from the movie and word of a new cast member who's no stranger to forests.
Dan Haggerty, best known as TV's "Grizzly Adams" but forever in the heart of schlock movie fans like myself for his portrayal of a chain-smoking department store Santa battling an evil Nazi elf in the bad movie classic Elves, has joined the cast of Bunyan.
Here's the latest press release regarding the ongoing filming of Bunyan:

Few things inspire true Wtf-ness quite like Elves, the 1990 chiller starring a chain-smoking Dan Haggerty as an alcoholic ex-cop turned department store Santa trying to prevent Neo-Nazis from completing their diabolical plan to spawn a satanic elf that must mate with a purebred Aryan virgin by Christmas Eve in order to procreate Adolf Hitler's half-human/half-elf master race that will conquer the world.
I'm not making any of this up.
Not a comedy or even a tongue-in-cheek horror flick, i>Elves takes itself awfully seriously for a motion picture involving the occult, the Antichrist, incest, Neo-Nazis with fake German accents, a Mommy Dearest that drowns pets in the toilet, a perverted kid brother who peeps on his sister as she dresses, a virgin girl wielding a magical elfstone, Dan Haggerty chain smoking so much he even brushes his teeth with a cigarette in his other hand, and a horny,...
