Bol Bachchan (2012) Was A Remake Of 1979 Film Gol Maal ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
It has been 45 years since Hrishikesh Mukerjee’s classic film Gol Maal was released in the theaters. The film received a cult status the moment people walked out of the theaters smiling. And it still leaves you with a smile whenever you watch the classic.
The film starred Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt in the lead role, with Bindiya Goswami, Shubha Khote, and Dina Pathak in the supporting lead. It earned a blockbuster status at the box office.
Years later, Rohit Shetty was so inspired by the film that he took inspiration twice. Once for Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, which borrowed only the name of the Og classic, and for the second time, he attempted a remake that was titled Bol Bachchan!

His portrayals of the idiosyncratic, moustache-fanatic, and rule-imposing Bhawani Shankar or the stern Acp Dhurandhar Bhatawadekar in a brace of breezy Bollywood comedies are undeniably unforgettable, but he played a more realistic role in ‘Guddi’ – that gentle deconstruction of the glittering yet hollow edifice of filmdom.
Utpal Dutt, as Prof Gupta in the 1971 film, knows neither scolding nor advice will change the filmstar-struck teenager (then Jaya Bhaduri in her first Hindi film), and the only way out is to let her indulge in fascination with films and learn first-hand the artificiality, heartbreaks, and struggle that lies behind them.
Portraying a teacher, with innovative ideas, was not difficult for Dutt, who was born on this day (March 29) in Bengal’s Barisal (now in Bangladesh) in 1929. He had been an English teacher in (then) Calcutta’s South Point School in the 1950s and earned his students’ admiration for his insights into literature,...

He was the alt superstar of Bangla cinema in its glory years, the affable Bhadralok icon who crafted a towering stature ironically banking on down-to-earth, believable characters that represented middle-class Bengal. The brand of stardom was in stark contrast to the other shining luminary of contemporary cinema in the state -- Uttam Kumar -- whose position as Mahanayak in the Bengali psyche was primarily cemented in idol worship and mass hysteria.
Soumitra Chattopadhyay -- Chatterjee to anglicised India -- answers to the term ‘phenomenon' as absolutely as few actors do, for the sheer ease with which he defied the cliches of image. His stardom was sensational, and yet born out of realism. He was the mascot of the peerless Satyajit Ray's oeuvre, having worked with the maestro in 14 films, and yet he scored with the same assuredness in works of contemporary commercial powerhouses as Ajoy Kar and Tarun Mazumdar.

While we get to watch new films all the time, the lockdown could be a golden chance to catch up with a few classics across genres. Digital platforms are overflowing with them, and you would literally be spoilt for choice selecting some really enjoyable stuff that has come out of Bollywood over the decades. Twenty-one days, it would seem, is too short a time to catch up with what really defines vintage Bollywood and is available in the Ott libraries.
Ians picks a few old films that you might want to revisit, that will let you relax and bust the stress of lockdown. Of course, this is not a definitive list.
* Chupke Chupke (1975)
Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the comedy film is about a man pretending to be a driver and fooling his wife's brother-in-law as an attempt to prove that the brother-in-law is not as smart as he claims to be.

Satyajit Ray's The Stranger (1991) is showing January 20 - February 18, 2020 in many countries around the world in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema.Bengalis, quite self-celebratory, build the foundations of their lives and societies on what they call culture and struggle. While culture encompasses their deep-seated love for cinema, sports, and the arts, struggle is more a comment on their Left-leaning ambitions which prevents them from ever becoming very rich. It is somewhat akin to the American usage of “hustle.”It is curious when Satyajit Ray (one of the reigning deities of that aforementioned culture) makes his last film The Stranger, in 1992, barely a few months before his death, holding a mirror to the community’s bourgeois hypocrisies and asking people to re-evaluate their priorities and revisit the definitions of culture, struggle, and pride embedded in their psyches. He wants people to educate their minds before falling into their echo chambers of unfounded pride.

The incredible Rajinikanth - the living legend on his own, known for his phenomenal star power and action once followed the subtle, controlled and noted nuance of Amol Palekar - the actor/filmmaker known for his award winning performance in evergreen gems like Golmaal and other memorable movies like Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat, Chitchor etc.
It may sound strange, weird but it?s true, the crowd pleasing massy flashy image of Thalaivar who can do anything onscreen followed the simplicity of Amol Palekar.
It was the year 1981; The Rajini mania was on the rise thanks to the remakes of his idol Amitabh Bachchan?s Don - Billa (1980), Amar Akbar Anthony - Ram Robert Rahim (May 1980), Deewar - Thee (1981) etc.

This is a movie that was not originally planned as a comedy and went on to win Indian National award for the best Feature film, Director and Actor for the year. “Bhuvan Shome” was released in 1969 and is widely credited as to have pioneered Indian Cinema’s new wave and is a confident endeavour at many levels.
It starts with depictions of the legends of Bengal (including Satyajit Ray) and makes one think of how fortunate the language, culture and art scene of the land had been and still is. You are sure in the least to envy those who call this part of India home.

Bollywood actor, Akshay Kumar, is always finding new ways to entertain his audiences, whether it be performing dangerous stunts or doing the unexpected that leaves the audience awestruck. Now Akshay has attempted a never-before-dreamt stunt for his upcoming film, The Shaukeens.
Along with his stunning leading lady in the film, Lisa Haydon, there is a scene where the two are sitting on a couch and hanging mid-air, which has left everybody speechless. This scene was shot with the help of a chopper, which flew the two stars on the red couch, high up in the air.
This decision was put forward by Akshay himself, who was inspired by a Tom and Jerry episode, and insisted that this scene has to be included in the film. The scene was shot on a stunning beach in Cape Town.

After many setbacks, the remake of the 80s Bollywood classic Shaukeen starring Akshay Kumar and Lisa Haydon, finally went on floor few weeks back and now the makers have decided to re-title the film. While initially they decided to retain the original title, now they believe that it should be titled as The Shaukeens.
Producer Murad Khetani stated that the title change adds the contemporary touch. Though it is an official remake, according to Murad, it is only the essence of the previous film that has been maintained. However, the story and the characters have undergone some changes in order to make it relevant to modern times. They are also planning to add some more humour, colour, more glamour and edginess in order to present it as a complete package. They feel that the current title adds to the coolness quotient and will be able to attract the youth audience too.

Movie Review: "Golmaal"; Star Cast: Vijaya Raghavendra, Shubha Poonja, Rangayana Raghu, Om Prakash Rao, Petrol Prasanna, Sanketh Kashi and others; Writer-Director: Pramod Chakravarthy; Producer: Anaji Nagaraj; Camera: R. Giri; Music Director: Radhey Krishna; Rating: * - drags, lacks fun element.
This "Golmaal" is different - it's neither a patch on Hrishikesh Mukherjee's classic comedy of the same name in which Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt had outwitted movie buffs, nor does it have any similarity with Bollywood filmmaker Rohit Shetty's recent "Golmaal" series that were high on commercial elements.
The Kannada film is a patience test for viewers.
Before the release, the producer and the director had claimed.

“If you start with a hero’s role, that’s all you’ll remain. You’ll never become an actor”
Even after 37 years of “Sholay”, it is very unlikely that one can forget the character actor A. K. Hangal who played the notable role of “Rahim Chacha” in the film with his famous one liner, “Itna sannata kyon hai, bhai”. Hangal, who passed away on August 26, in his last interview, given two months ago to Niilesh A Raje and Rajesh Subramanian:
“In Sholay, I was given the character role of a blind man and to get this character right I used psycho-technique to get the feeling of blindness,” revealed the veteran actor, when we met him at his modest apartment at Santacruz.
“I must admit that I got many fantastic roles. The length of the role never mattered to me; what mattered was the character”, added the nonagenarian who once advised actor Sanjeev Kumar,...

Mumbai, Aug 27: Rohit Roy was was hoping to cast A.K. Hangal in the remake of 1982 film "Shaukeen", but rues his wish will remain unfulfilled after the veteran actor's demise Sunday.
Hangal played Inder Sen, one of the three old men in the Basu Chatterjee movie, which also features Ashok Kumar and Utpal Dutt.
Rohit was set to direct a new age version of the movie, with Bipasha Basu in the lead, and wished Hangal could have shot a cameo for.

Get ready to laugh and marvel at all the stunts with Rohit Shetty’s latest film, Bol Bachchan, starring Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan with their leading ladies Asin and Prachi Desai. The film is inspired by the 1979 comedy gem, Gol Maal, with Amol Palekar playing a double role for his strict boss Utpal Dutt. As with most Rohit Shetty films, there’s a good mix of stunts, plotlines given away, and some fabulous dishoom dishoom which the trailer gets us hyped for. The famous moustache jokes seem apparent in this redo, but this time the invented brother is quite the camp character as revealed in Abhishek’s later entry. The girls look lovely here, but are mainly restricted to swishing their hair around! The trailer definitely sets up the comedy of mistaken identity, where Abbas Ali (Abhishek Bachchan) who is clearly on the wrong side of...

Soumitra Chatterjee
Soumitra Chatterjee has been my way of life. He is, for many Bengalis even if he passed our stage of life three decades ago. This is one classic test that he endured like his mentor Satyajit Ray. But even apart from the towering shadow of Ray, Soumitra carved out an image for himself which he fostered over a period of time, so much so that even younger generations can’t but try to emulate him.
Be it the dreamer in Apu (Apur Sansar) or Amal (Charulata), the charismatic sleuth in Feluda (Sonar Kella), the casual romantic in Teen Bhuvaner Paare (twisting his way to impress Tanuja) and Basanta Bilap or the fairy-tale villain Mayur Bahan in Jhinder Bandi, Soumitra has played it all. He had been a successful hero, second only to Uttam Kumar in popularity perhaps but never shied away from doing character roles even then. How...

Ever since Bol Bachchan was announced, there have been speculations galore around it being an official remake of Amol Palekar-Utpal Dutt starrer Golmaal. Since Rohit Shetty is the director of Bollywood's biggest franchise till date, Golmaal, there were no doubts whatsoever that it was time for payback. However, as it has turned out, even though rights of Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed laugh fest have been bought by the makers of Bol Bachchan, there would be an altogether different spin to the tale, hence ensuring that quite a few surprises would be in store for the viewers. "For Bol Bachchan, Rohit didn't want any controversies whatsoever", says a source attached to the film, "For his Sunday, he had bought rights of the Telugu film Anukokunda Oka Roju. Ditto for Singham which is the remake of namesake Tamil film. This is the reason why even though only the basic thread of...

Long Shadows: The Late Work of Satyajit Ray opens this evening and runs through April 26 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center: "Of special interest is Home and the World [1984; image above], his final, wonderful adaptation of a work by his mentor, Rabindranath Tagore (whose 150th anniversary we celebrate this year), as well as his final, luminous work, The Stranger, an extraordinary summing up of so much of Ray's worldview graced with a sensational lead performance by Utpal Dutt." Plus, "we asked some friends of the Film Society: what film would you recommend seeing, and why?" Meantime, Paul Brunick posts a roundup on Distant Thunder (1973) at Alt Screen. Update, 4/20: Salman Rushdie for the Fslc on The Golden Fortress (1974): "The film is a true delight and the moment when the Golden Fortress is discovered — when it is revealed not to be a child's fantasy but a real place, shimmering on...
