2020 might have been the year of the time loop movie, but Christopher Smith's 2009 horror film, "Triangle," is one of the best to ever do it. The underseen film has seen a resurgence in popularity as the time loop film as a style of storytelling has expanded beyond classics like "Turn Back The Clock," "The Twilight Zone," and most famously, "Groundhog Day." In "Triangle," a young mother named Jess (Melissa George) is struggling to adjust to raising her autistic son, Tommy (Joshua McIver), on her own. She has a planned day trip on a friend's boat, but strange little coincidences occurring throughout the day start to feel like devastating inevitabilities. As time continues to loop and realities begin to fold in on each other, making sense of the film can feel overwhelming if you're not used to the timey-wimey weirdness of a film like "Triangle."

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” launched with $2 million in North America on Thursday night in preview shows.
The number is in the same range as “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” which opened with $2.3 million in previews in June and went on to a $47 million launch weekend.
“Onward” is expected to dominate domestic moviegoing this weekend and collect between $40 million and $45 million at 4,310 sites. The movie centers on a pair of teenage elf brothers — voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland — on a quest to resurrect their dead father, who had arranged for them to receive a magic staff with a spell that will bring him back for only 24 hours so his sons can meet him.
Critical reception has been enthusiastic, earning the film an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Octavia Spencer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lena Waithe and Ali Wong are also in the voice cast. “Monsters University” helmer Dan Scanlon...

Ben Affleck struggles with sobriety in Warner Bros.’ first trailer for his sports drama “The Way Back.”
Affleck plays construction worker Jack Cunningham, who has a routine of drinking at every opportunity — in the shower, at work and at home. That routine is interrupted when he’s asked to coach the high school basketball team on which Affleck’s character was once the star. The job opened up because the previous coach suffered a heart attack.
Affleck takes the gig, explaining, “It keeps me busy. Keeps my mind off of other things.” He then tells one of the team’s players bluntly, “The reason they’re leaving you open is you can’t hit the ocean from the beach.”
That’s followed by more footage of an inebriated Jack, with Affleck saying in a voiceover, “I spent a lot of time hurting myself. I made a lot of bad decisions.

An underrated gem about death on a boat, Christopher Smith's Triangle is also a classic fable about sin and punishment, Ryan writes...
How can Triangle be summed up in just a sentence or two? It’s a thriller about a boat trip that goes horribly awry. Then it becomes a lean slasher flick set on an abandoned cruise liner. And then it flips over into - well, that’d just be spoiling things. And maybe this gets to the heart of why Triangle earned praise from critics but didn’t exactly soar at the box-office on its release in 2009: the movie doesn’t have any major stars, unless you count former Home & Away actress Melissa George or a pre-Hunger Games Liam Hemsworth, and it’s impossible to describe the plot in detail without ruining its many twists and turns.

Jason Lewis is so dreamy, even his sister wants to have sex with him. Well, at least that's the case in his two new Lifetime films, "If There Be Thorns" and "Seeds Of Yesterday," the third and fourth adaptations of V.C. Andrews' irresistibly twisted novels. While the actor is no stranger to sex scenes -- as seen by his work as Samantha Jones' hunky boyfriend Smith Jerrod on "Sex and the City" -- things were a little different this time around. In the films, Jason's character Christopher is in an incestuous relationship with sister Cathy, after the two connected while being locked in an attic by their mother as children. Check out the video above to see what he told toofab's Candice Brock about filming some of their racier ... and controversial ... scenes for the "Flowers In the Attic" sequel. Lifetime is officially moving forward with a third film in the "Flowers in the Attic" series, based on the novels by V.C. Andrews.
Jason Lewis and Rachael Carpani take over the roles of Christopher and Cathy Dollanganger respectively in "If There Be Thorns". The pair now live together as man and wife in California with Cathy's two sons (one played by Mason Cook), who are unaware of the nature of their parents’ relationship.
It's unclear which, if any, other cast members from either previous movie will return for the film which will air in 2015. An adaptation of the fourth book, "Seeds of Yesterday," is still planned and that would air late in 2015.
Andy Cochran will pen the script which will be directed by Independent Spirit Award nominee Nancy Savoca ("If These Walls Could Talk").

Lifetime has decided that neither of its freshman dramas are worthy of a second season. The cable channel cancelled The Protector in September and they've now canned Against the Wall as well.
Against the Wall stars Rachael Carpani as Abby Kowalski, a single cop who joins the Chicago department's internal affairs division. The series' co-stars include Andrew Walker, Brandon Quinn, Chris Johnson, Daniel Kash, James Thomas, Kathy Baker, Marisa Ramirez, Mayko Nguyen, Steve Byers, and Treat Williams.
Debuting on July 31st, the show attracted a mediocre 1.8 million viewers with a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, about on par with The Protector. Unfortunately, the numbers didn't improve throughout the season. The 12th and 13th episodes (now the show's last) aired on October 23rd. They each drew 1.4 million viewers and 0.4 demo ratings.

The shows you get out of Lifetime can be pretty hit or miss. That's generally a good thing as far as I'm concerned. You either love Drop Dead Diva, or you hate it, and I for one appreciate the "not for everyone" approach to show design. It's a recipe that gets trickier when you're venturing out into the massively overpopulated world of crime shows though, and Lifetime's new efforts, The Protector and Against the Wall, are faced with a tough road with genre norms butting heads against network image.
Shows focusing on cops and/or crime aren't well-suited to flights of fancy, or niche shtick, like several of Lifetime's other working models, and when people think Lifetime, a network that's going to suck in crime show fans is not exactly what leaps to mind.
I'm still not convinced by Lifetime's effort at balancing things with The Protector.

Treat Williams says the primetime lineup may have more blue bloods soon, and he'll be one of them.
The former "Everwood" star is committed to another family-oriented police drama, "Against the Wall," and he believes the series could start on Lifetime as soon as June. "We shot the pilot in December, and it was picked up last month," Williams tells Zap2it. "We start principal photography April 25th, and we'll be done by the end of the summer. And I guess if they like what they see, they'll pop us on in June."
Also starring multiple Emmy winner Kathy Baker ("Picket Fences"), plus Rachael Carpani as the young Internal Affairs officer who fuels much of the drama, "Against the Wall" certainly wouldn't mark Williams' first turn as a cop ... especially after his memorable performance in the 1981 movie "Prince of the City."

Triangle Written and Directed by: Christopher Smith Starring: Melissa George, Liam Hemsworth, Michael Dorman, Henry Nixon, Rachael Carpani, Emma Lung, Joshua McIvor Sitting down to watch a horror/thriller called Triangle that takes place on a boat out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, you'd be forgiven for expecting a fairly straightforward and unoriginal story. But take all those preconceptions and throw them out the window, because this isn't just another cheesy take on the legend of the Bermuda Triangle (at least not explicitly). Written and directed by Christopher Smith, the British director behind the gory horror-comedy Severance, this is a strange and wonderful mindbender of a film -- one that navigates uncharted waters and pulls you down into a dizzying whirlpool of weirdness.
