The annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program has officially announced its 2024 grant recipients. The star-studded three-day workshop is a coveted experience for selected female filmmakers, and has served as a launchpad for filmmakers such as Nikyatu Jusu (“Nanny”), Kat Coiro (“She-Hulk”), and A.V. Rockwell (“A Thousand and One”).
The 2024 jurors included Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Olivia Wilde, Beanie Feldstein, Lucy Liu, and Joanna Calo. Filmmaking duo Sophia Youssef and Céline Bava-Helms was awarded the grand prize for their short film “Black Shore.”
“Black Shore” received full production funding; per an official statement, “the short tells the story about Evangelina, who, forced to look after her ailing mother back home in Santorini, must confront the reality that her mother’s lifelong obsession with mythological monsters and an ancient family curse might not be pure fantasy, but a terrifying warning that some fates are inherited.”

James McAvoy has become the spokesperson for introverts.
If you are an extrovert, consider yourself amongst the heavens’ chosen ones because life can be absolute hell for us introverts. When extroverts meet a new group of people their outgoing personalities shine bright and they are able to remain as charming as ever. When introverts are thrown into a new friend circle, our concentration is only on how not to sweat through our clothes. James McAvoy knows this all too well.

What makes a movie good? Better yet, what makes it successful? Is it based on office numbers or streaming views? What attracts a viewer to the theater or to press play? Even Steven Soderbergh isn’t quite sure, but he does have one idea on what filmmakers need to do…
Appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival, Steven Soderbergh stated, “It’s gotten more difficult to quantify what is bringing people to a specific film, and what makes a specific film a hit…At the end of the day, the only solve is good shit. You got to make good shit. You’ve got to focus on that.” Adding to this, Soderbegh said that star power almost always has to be a factor. “For movies to work, they need movie stars. It’s great if the story is big enough to pull people in on its own, but that’s hard,...

Penned by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter launched the careers of Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. The duo was just 12 and 10 years old, respectively, when, with their incredible acting skills, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger took the world by storm in 2001. What started with one movie quickly escalated into a full-blown franchise.

Steven Soderbergh has opened up about a giant book on Jaws, the classic Steven Spielberg thriller he first saw in 1975, that he has been working on for nearly 15 years.
“I’ve been working on this thing [the book] that is ostensibly about directing and uses as its spine an analysis of the making of Jaws day-to-day,” Soderbergh revealed during an informal conversation at the Toronto Film Festival on Thursday.
Don’t expect his how-to Jaws tome to be sold at airports, however.
“This book is not for general consumption. This is for people who are interested in films, either as moviegoers or [who] want to do this job. Because if you’re going to do this job, you need to understand the job. This is the job,” Soderbergh said of his long-gestating passion project.
Do expect more than a scene-by-scene analysis of Jaws: “I’m going to walk you through the experience...

The teaser for Neon’s Presence opens with the camera panning down to a house. Wording appears that reads: “In this house there is a family. In this house there are secrets. In this house there are unimaginable acts.” As the camera nears the front door, the final message appears: “In this house there is a…” The screen fades to black and the film’s title appears.
Creepy? Yes. Also, other than the fact there’s a house with a lot of history, the teaser gives away nothing. Neither does the synopsis provided by Neon: “A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.”
The cast includes Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Julia Fox, Eddy Maday, and West Mulholland. Steven Soderbergh directs from a screenplay by David Koepp. Koepp and Corey Bayes serve as executive producers. Soderbergh’s behind-the-scenes team includes production designer April Lasky,...

Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story Presence has been acquired by Neon, giving a new spin on the haunted house format. A new teaser unveiled this morning highlights the setting, further establishing the unconventional haunting ahead.
Presence releases theatrically in select cities on January 17, 2025.
Check out the official teaser trailer for Presence below.
I wrote in my review out of Sundance, “Soderbergh reunites with Kimi screenwriter David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) to give an innovative new spin on the quintessential ghost story. Presence frames its haunted events entirely from the perspective of its ghost. From the opening frame until the end credits, audiences see the thrilling story unfold through chilling narrative twists via Soderbergh’s experimentation with form and technique. Using the camera’s gaze as the ghost’s observing eyes isn’t the only trick up Soderbergh and Koepp’s sleeves, ensuring this exciting shakeup of the haunted house keeps you guessing.

Earlier this year, JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray got to check out the Sundance Film Festival premiere of director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp’s ghost story Presence, and in his 7/10 review (which you can read Here), he described the film as “a supernatural tale that’s light on horror but heavy on heart.” A wider audience will have the chance to see the movie soon after we switch over to our 2025 calendars, as Neon is planning to give Presence a limited theatrical release on January 17th. The first teaser for the January release dropped last month, and now a second teaser trailer for the film has arrived online. You can watch it in the embed above.

Steven Soderbergh built his reputation in part on his “one for them, one for me” mentality, alternating between making high-profile studio projects and offbeat, and often lo-fi, experiments. At first glance, his latest effort, Presence, a haunted house story staged exclusively through the Pov of a ghost, would appear to fall firmly in the latter camp. But while the out-there concept invites a host of tantalizing possibilities, the film’s adherence to conventional and uninspired plotting sees Presence fall into a blasé middle ground.
Opening in an empty suburban house, Presence establishes the viewpoint of its central apparition with a sequence where Soderbergh’s camera roams feverishly through the different rooms and up and down the stairs. Then, a real estate agent (Julia Fox) enters the picture, accompanied by some prospective buyers, a well-to-do married couple, Rebekah (Lucy Liu) and Chris (Chris Sullivan), and their two teenage children, Tyler (Eddy Maday...

ABC has shared its first promo for this year’s 76th Emmys, hosted by Dan Levy and Eugene Levy — and for the spot they’re going high-brow — er, eyebrow. Yep, it’s probably appropriate that the first father-son Emmy hosting duo kick things off with a dad joke.
In the spot, Dan warns his dad not to aim for a low-hanging eyebrows gag. But Eugene can’t resist. The promo was released on Tuesday night during ABC’s primetime lineup — which included “The Bachelorette” season finale. And the ad also comes as the Television Academy kicks the month of Emmy Awards into high gear, with the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend, Sept. 7 and Sept. 8, at the Peacock Theatre in downtown LA.

In recent years, the rapid advance of A.I. technology has become an urgent concern across multiple industries. It’s helping students plagiarize papers. It’s imitating your loved ones to scam you on the phone. Before last year’s strikes, members of the Writers and Screen Actors Guilds were raising the alarm that stingy studio heads would use it to replace them. Video game performers are currently on strike, in part over fears about A.I.; the Animation Guild could be next. And earlier this spring, one SAG member went public with her concerns about the technology hijacking her likeness.

Demi Moore is reflecting on her career after starring in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle alongside Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu.
“What’s interesting is I felt [criticism] more when I hit my 40s. I had done Charlie’s Angels, and there was a lot of conversation around this scene in a bikini, and it was all very heightened, a lot of talk about how I looked,” Moore told Michelle Yeoh for Interview magazine. “And then I found that there didn’t seem to be a place for me. I didn’t feel like I didn’t belong. It’s more like I felt that feeling of, I’m not 20, I’m not 30, but I wasn’t yet what they perceived as a mother.”
After starring as Madison Lee in the 2003 Charlie’s Angels sequel, Moore questioned her place in Hollywood.

When we think of notorious pirates of history, Jean Lafitte, Capt. Morgan, and Blackbeard leap to mind – impressively chevelured and bewhiskered British or Frenchmen who swash-buckled through the Atlantic, Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico. But in terms of larceny upon the high seas, they may have been eclipsed not by a man or a European, but by a Chinese woman: Cheng Shih.
Actress Lucy Liu brings the charismatic corsair back to life in The Pirate Queen, a VR experience from Meta and Singer Studios that immerses users in a 19th century world of intrigue and adventure. The narrative directed and produced by Eloise Singer and produced by Liu and Siobhan McDonnell is nominated for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Emerging Media Program.
Liu and Singer first learned of Cheng Shi somewhat randomly.

Futurama not only entertains with its witty humor and charismatic characters, but also surprises with its ability to predict our reality.
Since its debut in 1999, the show has introduced many futuristic technologies and events that later became reality.
1. The Series Has Landed – Season 1 Episode 2
The team sets off for Luna Park. As they approach, the team admires the scenery and make plans for the evening – checking out the rides and rescuing the local aliens.
Thanks to Bender's skills and Leela's leadership, they solve any problems that arise, and Amy suggests asking her parents for money to pay for new rides, which leads to an argument among the team about using her family's wealth.
In this episode, Amy was briefly shown playing virtual skeeball. This was the closest the creators have come to showing what the virtual reality headsets will look like and how to use them.

Steven Soderbergh directs a supernatural thriller with a unique perspective twist. Here’s the first trailer for Presence, starring Lucy Liu and Julia Fox:
Director Steven Soderbergh has been on a roll recently, having released at least one film a year since 2017 and sometimes two. These have included Logan Lucky, Unsane, High Flying Bird, The Laundromat, Let Them All Talk, No Sudden Move, Kimi and Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
His latest film, Presence, has a unique twist to it: the story’s shot from the perspective of a supernatural entity that stalks an ordinary suburban family. After debuting at Sundance early this year, the movie was picked up for distribution by Neon – the company that recently enjoyed a huge hit with serial killer horror, Longlegs.
According to Deadline, The synopsis reads as follows:
A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone, but rather surrounded by a mysterious entity.

Whilst Steven Soderbergh is already hard at work on his upcoming Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett starring spy drama Black Bag, we've all been sat here waiting patiently for the prolific filmmaker's most recent film Presence ever since it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Today, we got a chance to feel Soderbergh's horror-thriller's, er, well, presence for the first time as American distributor Neon released an eerie first teaser trailer for the Lucy Liu starring movie. Check it out below:
Well that teaser and us have something in common — we're both speechless! Following in the vein of recent cryptic teasers for movies like Longlegs, Cuckoo, and The Substance (that the first two of those are also Neon-distributed features is surely no coincidence), this one really doesn't give anything away at all. But even though you may look at this foreboding, forty-second slow pull back from a still suburban...

Steven Soderbergh’s new film, Presence, has received a mysterious teaser trailer ahead of its theatrical release on January 17th, 2025. Watch it below.
Presence is a psychological thriller that centers around the Payne family — portrayed by Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Eddy Maday, and Callina Liang — who unwittingly move into a haunted house sold to them by a real estate agent played by Julia Fox.
The teaser itself doesn’t give much insight into the movie. Instead, it lists some of Soderbergh’s past films, including Traffic, Contagion, and Magic Mike before slowly panning around a suburban home.
Similarly, the logline simply says, “A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.”
Directed by Soderbergh, Presence was penned by David Koepp, best known for his work on Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, and Spider-Man. West Mulholland also stars. The film’s theatrical release will come one year...

Directed by Soderbergh, Presence was penned by David Koepp, best known for his work on Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, and Spider-Man. West Mulholland also stars. The film’s theatrical release will come one year...

"The new film from Soderbergh..." Neon has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for Steven Soderbergh's new ghost story film Presence. We've been waiting for a release date for this one ever since Sundance earlier this year! It premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and is one of the best horror films from this fest, a fascinating shot-in-one-location thriller about a family that moves into a very nice house. Neon has now confirmed that the film will open in limited theaters in January 2025 early next year. A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone. The rest of the story must not be spoiled - wait until you watch. Presence stars Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Julia Fox, Eddy Maday, and West Mulholland. It's a very slick film with a smooth camera following a ghost that drifts around this house with a not-that-scary...

In anticipation of the release, they have already unveiled a teaser trailer for the movie, and you can check that out in the embed above.
The story of Presence gets rolling when a family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they are not alone. A supernatural force has infiltrated the house, and taken a specific interest in the couple’s daughter.

Steven Soderbergh returned to Sundance in 2024 with indie horror film “Presence.” Now, the feature will be haunting theaters one year later thanks to distributor Neon.
“Presence” centers on a family of four, played by Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Eddy Maday, and Callina Liang, who move into a haunted house after a real estate agent (Julia Fox) convinces them it’s the perfect property. Liang’s character Chloe quickly realizes there is a titular presence that may or may not be sinister, though…

West Mulholland also stars. “Presence” is written by David Koepp and directed by auteur Soderbergh. The film debuted at Sundance 2024 and was recently announced as a Centrepiece screening for TIFF.

One of the most entertaining films to premiere at Sundance earlier this year, Steven Soderbergh’s formally inventive ghost tale Presence has now reappeared. Ahead of a stop at the Toronto International Film Festival, Neon has now announced a January 17, 2025 theatrical release for the supernatural thriller starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland, and Julia Fox. Ahead of the release, the first teaser trailer and poster have now arrived.
I said in my review, “For a prolific artist, a surge of creativity can often be synonymous with a dip in quality. Though not if you are Steven Soderbergh. He’s only continued to reinvent himself and forge ahead with new technology, subjects, and structural gambles. His latest film, Presence, is a haunting ghost tale wrapped in a nuanced family drama, and one of his most formally ambitious attempts yet. What if the camera, operated by Peter Andrews...

“Presence” will soon be felt.
Steven Soderbergh’s highly anticipated ghost story, written by David Koepp and starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan and Julia Fox, will be released theatrically by Neon in January 2025. The studio released a brand-new teaser for the psychological thriller on Wednesday, which you can watch below.
The approach that the teaser takes is nifty — it just lists off some of Soderbergh’s past masterpieces, while a camera slowly moves from outside of a suburban house to inside. That’s it. The implication is clear: “Presence” is an event, as only the second Soderbergh movie to be released theatrically since 2018’s “Unsane” and the other film (“Magic Mike’s Last Dance”) was made for streaming before being changed at the last minute to a theatrical release. That really does make “Presence” special.

The logline for Steven Soderbergh’s mysterious new film, Presence, reads, “A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.” But there’s no need for our protagonists—played by Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Eddy Maday, and Callina Liang, with an assist from Julia Fox...

Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story Presence has been acquired by Neon, and the distributor has announced this week that they’ll be releasing the acclaimed film in January 2025.
Check out the official poster art and teaser trailer for Presence below.
Meagan Navarro raved in her review, “Soderbergh reunites with Kimi screenwriter David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) to give an innovative new spin on the quintessential ghost story. Presence frames its haunted events entirely from the perspective of its ghost. From the opening frame until the end credits, audiences see the thrilling story unfold through chilling narrative twists via Soderbergh’s experimentation with form and technique. Using the camera’s gaze as the ghost’s observing eyes isn’t the only trick up Soderbergh and Koepp’s sleeves, ensuring this exciting shakeup of the haunted house keeps you guessing.”
