Like Woody at the end of Toy Story 4, filmmaker Josh Cooley was striking out on a new adventure. It was March 2020, and the filmmaker had won an Oscar for Toy Story a month earlier. Despite the accolades, he made the consequential decision to leave Pixar, the company where he had spent his entire professional career after starting there as an intern 18 years earlier.
It was a Friday, his last day of work before he uprooted his family to try his luck in Los Angeles. He had made the decision after realizing that given the realities of the Pixar slate pipeline, if he stayed he wouldn’t release a movie for another decade. He was sad, but excited.
Then came Monday, March 16. The day America shut down because of the Covid-19 pandemic. A sickening knot in his stomach twisted and squirmed.
“I don’t have health insurance for my family anymore.

In 2010 the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the Best Picture winner. Over the ensuing 14 years, there has been a difference between the winners of that award and Best Director at six Academy Awards ceremonies. Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. While voters simply select one nominee in those other races, when it comes to Best Picture they are asked to rank all the nominees. If one contender garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it wins. If, however, no nominee crosses that threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second-place pick. This process...

The Friends actor says he regrets not going for the role made famous by Will Smith, but could he have made ‘I make this look good’ as good?
Hollywood is full of tantalising “what-if?” moments; decisions made on the spur of the moment that have far-reaching repercussions for all involved. What if Robert Zemeckis had persevered with Eric Stoltz on the Back to the Future set, rather than bringing in Michael J Fox? What if Tom Selleck had played Indiana Jones instead of Harrison Ford? What if, as initially wanted by the film’s producers, Robert Altman had directed Alien?
And now we can add another big mystery to the list. What if David Schwimmer had starred in Men in Black instead of Will Smith?...

For a good while, it seemed as though everything Steven Spielberg touched turned to gold. Having established the very concept of the blockbuster with "Jaws" in 1975, the director went on to make hit after hit with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977), "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981), and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" (1982). Even 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was a box office success, despite shocking some viewers who weren't used to such a dark and oddly violent effort from the director. Critical response to the movie was also more mixed than it had been for its predecessor. Of course, anyone following Spielberg's career closely would have known that "Temple of Doom" was not the first time the seemingly infallible director had fallen afoul of the critics.
Sandwiched between "Close Encounters" and "Raiders" in Spielberg's filmography is "1941." Made in 1979, this war comedy featured an ensemble cast that included Dan Aykroyd,...

Thirty-nine seconds of cringe.
That’s the only way to describe a single deleted scene from Back to the Future that thankfully found its way to the cutting room floor. In one view, the missing 40 seconds simply takes the movie’s existing discomfort to another level. In another light, the scene somehow manages to add a new layer of ick.
The scene in question begins with an anxious Marty outside the high school, contemplating a scheme he’s concocted with Doc Brown that involves young McFly putting the moves on his own mother. “You look a little pale,” observes Doc. “Are you okay?”
Of course he’s not okay! Wasn’t there any other way to get back to the future than by attempting to seduce teenage Lorraine? It’s bad enough that she’s already scoped out his Calvin Kleins.

Despite all its shortcomings, Steven Spielberg’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull gave fans one of the most iconic moments in the entire franchise, which sees Indy taking shelter from a nuclear blast in a refrigerator. Interestingly, the seeds for this scene were sown decades back during the scripting of one of the most influential films of all time.

Like the film itself, the opening and ending of Back to the Future are iconic, and it’s hard to imagine them otherwise. But this was almost the case until Universal cut the budget for the film.

While in most cases, a reduced budget often impacts a project negatively, in Back to the Future‘s case, it was certainly a blessing in disguise.

Great trilogies are hard to come by, as not only does the threequel have to be good in its own right, but the film also has the pressure to build upon the existing entries without losing its own identity. Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future trilogy is one such example, which cemented itself at the Mount Rushmore of great trilogies, standing toe to toe with the likes of Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy, and Lotr.

Moreover, the acclaimed filmmaker has made his stance clear on the possibility of a fourth entry in the franchise, stressing that he has no intention of giving in to the studio’s demand.

Everyone knows that Steven Spielberg's "1941" was a notorious box office flop. And everyone ... is wrong. Despite its reputation over the years, Spielberg's 1979 war comedy was not a box office failure. It just looked that way because, well, it was a Steven Spielberg movie. In '79, in the wake of the record-breaking box office juggernaut that was "Jaws" and its successful follow-up "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Steven Spielberg seemed untouchable. It felt like the wunderkind director could not fail — that, like a cinematic King Midas, everything he touched would turn to gold.
"1941" changed that. While the film went on to become a modest box office success, taking in $94.9 million on a $35 million budget, it was not well received. Critics were mixed at best on the film. As Roger Ebert wrote, "The movie finally reduces itself to an assault on our eyes and ears, a nonstop series of climaxes,...

For the past two years, movie theaters have struggled through deep droughts in September and October as they waited for end-of-year tentpoles like “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and surprises like “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” to rescue them.
They won’t have to worry about that in 2024.
Between now and Thanksgiving, the release slate promises the most consistent batch of offerings that exhibitors have enjoyed since the pandemic began in 2020. It starts this weekend with a potential $100 million-plus opening for Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” That will kick off a series of franchise sequels, animated offerings and specialty hopefuls that may not yield a billion-dollar hit, but should keep the market slump-free.
Analysts who spoke to TheWrap are expecting a dramatic improvement from the $1.58 billion the domestic box office generated last September through November. But the bigger goal will be to reach the $2.42 billion made in that span in 2019 — the year...

Isabella Rossellini wanted the “Death Becomes Her” set to be a shared experience, even if she wasn’t the one disrobing onscreen.
The actress told Variety that while she didn’t believe she was fit enough at the time to show off her rear end in one sequence of the film, which co-starred Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, Rossellini didn’t want her body double to feel abandoned at all.

We seem to be living through a golden age of Death Becomes Her fandom.
The Robert Zemeckis black comedy was a box office hit when it first hit theaters in 1992, and has since been embraced by a legion of LGBTQ film lovers, many of whom see the campy Meryl Streep vehicle as a “cornerstone of Queer culture.” These days, Death Becomes Her seems to be everywhere. There’s the musical adaptation, which is coming soon to Broadway…

Robert Zemeckis’ “Here” will have its world premiere at the 2024 AFI Fest, where it will be the Centerpiece Screening, the American Film Institute announced on Tuesday. The screening will take place on Oct. 25 at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.
With a screenplay by Eric Roth that’s based on Richard McGuire’s graphic novel by the same name, “Here” reunites the stars of “Forrest Gump,” Tom Hanks and Robin Right, with that film’s director, Zemeckis. As described by AFI, the film is a “tale of love, loss, laughter and life” that follows “multiple families and a special place they inhabit” — the “here” of the movie’s title. The cast also includes Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly and Michelle Dockery. In addition to directing, Zemeckis produced “Here” with Jack Rapke, Derek Hogue and Bill Block.

The Student Academy Awards is heading east. On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced that the annual ceremony honoring achievement in student filmmaking will take place not at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, as in years past, but at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London. The 51st Student Academy Awards will take place on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, in partnership with the BFI London Film Festival.
The move to the U.K. underscores the Academy’s increasing emphasis on international student films. Last year, the three winners in animation and three in narrative were all from European schools. Academy CEO Bill Kramer referenced the international focus in a statement:
“As a leader in our international film community, and as our organization becomes more global in focus, the Academy is thrilled to bring the Student Academy Awards to London this year. We are deeply...

This post contains spoilers for the "Back to the Future" trilogy.
Director Robert Zemeckis struggled with creating a successful, financially viable project after helming two films at the onset of his career — 1978's "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and 1980's "Used Cars" — which were produced by his mentor, Steven Spielberg. Despite being backed by such a bankable stalwart in the industry, Zemeckis' films experienced commercial failure time and again, making it difficult for him to land meaningful work during the early 1980s. However, his longtime collaborator, Bob Gale, teamed up with Zemeckis again to pen the script for a time-travel adventure focused on a teenager and an eccentric scientist, which was rejected by several studios at the time, prompting him to seek support from Spielberg's own production company, Amblin Entertainment. Although Spielberg's involvement was minimal compared to past collaborations, the director joined as an executive producer, allowing the project to take off.

At the very start of the noughties, the horror genre was churning out some decent, if unspectacular movies. We saw the re-emergence of the spoof with the first entry in the Scary Movie franchise, Pinhead and co. continued to wreak spiky havoc in Hellraiser: Inferno, while the werewolf genre would get revived with the fun and well received Ginger Snaps. We also got a pretty poor Blair Witch sequel, and let’s face it, the first movie in that series only got traction due to an ingenious marketing campaign, and the media spouting bollocks about people being sick in the cinema from shock. Not the incredibly shaky camera work. Requiem for a Dream provided some messed up thrills, as did the similarly perverted Hollow Man. However, for every decent horror movie that was released, we also got howlers like Da Hip Hop Witch with Eminem. My point is, what the...

Some actors don’t want their movies tampered with, while others welcome sequels and remakes. Christopher Lloyd revealed his thoughts on a potential new Back to the Future film. He also discussed how Doc Brown stacks up to his other famous roles.
Christopher Lloyd said a new ‘Back to the Future’ could be ‘brilliant’
The Back to the Future films each have a different flavor. The original movie showed us the 1950s, Back to the Future Part II showed us a futuristic 2015, and Back to the Future Part III was set in the Old West in 1885. While the films told different stories, they all relied on the charisma of Loyd’s Doc Brown to engage audiences. A Back to the Future movie without him would be a big adjustment for fans, many of whom see the Back to the Future trilogy as an integral part of their childhoods.

Sabrina Carpenter’s big secret is out. During her appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Thursday, Carpenter discussed her “secret” music video for her latest song “Taste” and spilled a bit on how Jenna Ortega came to be involved in the project.
“[The video] was inspired by one of my favorite films, and she was a huge fan of the film,” Carpenter said of Ortega. “I’m so excited for you guys to see this video, you have no idea. I think it’s my favorite one I’ve ever done.”
The music video for “Taste” seems to clearly be based on the 1992 Robert Zemeckis black comedy, “Death Becomes Her.” The video starts with a parental advisory for “graphic violence” before showing Carpenter eyeing a selection of lovingly organized weapons placed upon a pink bed.

Not every actor is a Samuel L. Jackson, gladly signing an extensive superhero movie contract to play Nick Fury as many times as Marvel Studios wants him. Some are more like James Bond actor George Lazenby, securing an iconic part and then instantly worrying it'll cause typecasting. Meanwhile, some stars can't get along with the studio, while others, unfortunately, die before the role has run its course. No property or individual movie is immune to the possibility of recasting. It's just that some do it a lot better than others.
In the sci-fi realm, long-running franchises often pose unique casting challenges, but others are simply so difficult or so weird that they necessitated unexpected changes. The multiverse offers more recasting possibilities than most, as "Doctor Who" and its endless regenerations -- a sci-fi solution to a real-world problem -- regularly demonstrates. How the fans, the actors, and the studio react cannot always be predicted,...

With Season 5, Part 2, of the hit Paramount Network series set to ride onto our screens later this year, the stakes have never been higher….or more unpredictable.

Fans have loved Tom Hanks’ body of work over the years, and he has won several accolades for his incredible performances. The 90s was a seminal decade for the actor where he did some of his best films, including Saving Private Ryan, Green Mile, Philadelphia, and Forrest Gump. He won back-to-back Oscars for the latter two.

Outside of brilliant character drams, Hanks also starred in several studio blockbusters such as Angels & Demons, Inferno, and The Da Vinci Code. The films were a part of the Robert Langdon trilogy that the actor did with Ron Howard. While the latter was a big commercial success, it received a scathing reaction from audiences when it premiered at Cannes.

Riding high on the momentum of Longlegs, here’s a trailer for director Osgood Perkins’ follow-up, The Monkey, based on Stephen King’s writing.
While you shouldn’t get your hopes up regarding the content of Neon’s recently-released teaser for The Monkey – it’s certainly not a long one! – it’s worthy of report all the same given that the film has been flying somewhat under the radar for a while now. It’s a project that we haven’t yet covered yet but given the success of Neon latest horror thriller, Longlegs, Neon has elected to use that forward momentum to highlight its upcoming take on the Stephen King short story.

Neon is taking advantage of its Longlegs momentum with a first glimpse at director Osgood Perkins’ next project.
Neon shared the first teaser trailer for The Monkey Monday, ahead of the horror movie’s Feb. 21, 2025 debut in theaters. The spot features Theo James, who stars in the film alongside Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell and Sarah Levy.
In the brief video, a snare drum apparently played by a toy monkey is suddenly splattered in blood, as is James. Carnival-style music accompanies the footage.
The film centers on twins Bill and Hal, both played by James, whose discovery of their dad’s monkey toy in the attic leads to a string of grisly deaths.

Sooner or later, it would appear almost every filmmaker adapts a Stephen King story. They have not always been winners, but when they work, they really work. And hopes are high given that the latest, The Monkey (which is drawn from the short horror story featured in King's 1985 collection Skeleton Crew) comes via Osgood Perkins, whose Longlegs was creepily effective and has seen big success at the box office. Check out a very brief teaser for the film, which stars Theo James:
With James Wan – no stranger to horror himself — as a producer, The Monkey has the following official synopsis: "When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again,...

Just crossing the $90 million mark at the worldwide box office (with over $71 million in the U.S. alone), it’s safe to say Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs is one of the bonafide successes of the year. Neon is now reuniting with the director on a feature he already shot earlier this year and will arrive next February.
The Monkey, based on Stephen King’s 1980 short story, stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy. Ahead of a February 21, 2025 release, Neon attached the teaser trailer ahead of Cuckoo this past weekend and now it has made its way online.
“It’s gonna feel more like Misery or Creepshow or Gremlins or American Werewolf. It couldn’t be less like Longlegs. To me, if you’re gonna make a movie about a toy monkey, you can be serious about it. But so much of King is funny and nostalgic feeling.

Visual storytelling is necessarily a collaborative endeavor, which means there are multiple points where everything can go wrong. The good news is we can now eliminate some of the most unpredictable variables of the process — the onscreen talent. Mainstream movies and television are increasingly hopping aboard the deepfake bandwagon, so get ready for a creep-ass cinematic future.

Sony Pictures has moved up the release of TriStar’s “Here,” the upcoming drama that reunites “Forrest Gump” trio Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, to Nov. 1.
Also starring Michelle Dockery and Paul Bettany, the film focuses on a single spot of land from the creation of Earth to the present day, eventually focusing on a couple that gets married and moves into the house that is built on that land.
“Here” was previously set for release on Nov. 15, but now has some space from two major tentpole films: Universal’s “Wicked” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II.”
The movie will now be released alongside a pair of specialty titles with Oscar potential: Focus Features’ Vatican thriller “Conclave” starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, and Searchlight’s Sundance acquisition “A Real Pain” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin. Unlike those films, “Here” will be a wide release.

Updated with new release date: Sony said Tuesday that it will now open Miramax’s Here, the reteam of Forrest Gump filmmaker Robert Zemeckis and its stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, on November 1. It’s the only studio theatrical release going wide on that day after Samuel Goldwyn’s Liam Neeson title Absolution, Viva’s animated Hitpig and the George Huang-directed Luke Evans movie Weekend in Taipei. There’s been no buzz that Here will land a place at the fall’s film festival troika of Toronto, Venice and Telluride.
Previously, June 21: Sony said Friday that its new film Here, reuniting the director, writer, and stars of the classic Forrest Gump, will open wide via TriStar Pictures on November 15.
Previously, the film had been scheduled for an exclusive run in Los Angeles in New York on that date, with a limited and wide release to follow on November 22 and November 27, respectively.

Speculation is running rampant about Dune’s Timothee Chalamet starring in Forrest Gump 2, a follow-up to ’90s classic Forrest Gump, in 2025.
In 1994, mainstream audiences were introduced to Forrest Gump. Played by Tom Hanks (who nabbed an Oscar for his performance) Forrest is a simple man who continually seemed to find himself in extraordinary scenarios throughout the 20th century.
Forrest Gump, directed by Back to the Future helmer Robert Zemeckis, was an enormously successful motion picture and its legacy is surely still felt 30 years later. As such, calls for a sequel have been frequent by some camps.

Wyatt Russell was born to Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn on July 10, 1986, eight days after "Big Trouble in Little China," his pop's third and lamentably final big-screen collaboration with John Carpenter, bombed at the box office. The martial arts action-fantasy movie didn't seriously damage Russell's career, but it did alter its trajectory a tad. Just about everything after "Big Trouble in Little China" was a two-hander or an ensemble piece. Though he could still mess around in nonsense like "Overboard" and "Captain Ron," he couldn't dominate a movie with a broad, endearingly dopey hero like Jack Burton anymore.
Kurt Russell has many different modes, but I grew up with a preference for his swaggering himbos, guys who were so supremely confident in their capabilities that, like Wile E. Coyote, they didn't realize how far off the edge of the cliff they'd run. Watching a lug like Burton scramble out of...

If the first thought that crossed your mind after you came across the title, the trailer, or clips from Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie was, “Haven’t I already seen this movie before?” Well, you’re not wrong. Earlier this year, this movie was leaked on Twitter, and it was up for about 5 hours on the social platform before it was taken down. But, since nothing on the internet ever gets deleted, it was downloaded and shared in various formats. Hence, the movie has been unofficially reviewed and rated across many platforms. As someone who happens to be chronically online, I did take a peek at it. However, as soon as I realized that it was an unfinished product, I peeled my eyes away from it. And I am so glad that I did because Saving Bikini Bottom is silly, fun, and delivers a surprisingly relevant commentary on consumerism.

As this year heralds the 30th anniversary of the much-loved film Forrest Gump, we can’t help but reminisce about the box of chocolates that is life, so eloquently depicted in this timeless cinematic gem. Showered with six Oscars, including the trifecta of Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director, Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 masterpiece threaded the tale of a sweet but simple-minded everyman, portrayed to perfection by Tom Hanks.

Yet, beneath the accolades and the movie’s warm blanket of nostalgia, there is a tale of a different tune. Winston Groom, the original author of the Forrest Gump novel, cast a less-than-enchanted eye on the adaptation that strayed from his unique vision, a vision that the film had, perhaps, dimmed.
But this is not all. The film earned some contrasting opinions, including those from Groom and other critics, like Taylor Sheridan.
