- After wasting away the inheritance that he demanded from his father, Stan Barkley, is beaten down, rejected and humiliated by all the so called friends he had when he was spending lavishly on them. Not even having enough to eat, he enters a shelter to face more humiliation. Having been brought to such a low state, Stan turns to his last resort, hoping his father will at most bring him on as a hired hand with the family business. Stan knocks on the door of his parents house expecting a cold, hard welcome, but something significant happens instead. His father has compassion on him and begins hugging and kissing him. When Anthony Barkley, Stan's older brother arrives with his wife Jessica and their eight year old son Luke, he is surprised to see Stan, his father, Tom and mother, Ann laughing and having a good time. Immediately, Anthony resents Stan's return anticipating that he would be asking for more money. Anthony worked hard to pull the family business back together after Stan took one-third of the business and sold it for his own reckless use. When Tom offers Stan his old position back in the company, Anthony sees this as an injustice towards him and even seems worried about his own security in the family. When this happens, we see that Anthony is not just angry with his brother, but also with his father. Turmoil soon develops within the Barkley family. Stan is then diagnosed with leukemia, which Anthony blames on his wild and lavish lifestyle. Stan undergoes a series of tests and chemotherapy. When the chemo doesn't seem to be taking effect, the doctors begin to look for a Bone Marrow Donor, but there is no match. When all hope seems to disappear, an arbitrary test on Luke shows he's a match but Anthony and Jessica refuse to subject their son to the procedure, which tears the family apart even further. Luke understands that he could be his uncle's only hope and knows his parents do not want him involved. That Sunday at church, Luke takes his parents to the front of the church and asks Pastor Mike for a prayer request. The request is that Pastor Mike asks Jesus to help his dad and mom make the right decision so he can help his uncle Stan. The next series of events that take place are no short of God's miracle and the power of prayer. Luke is based on the famous parable the "Prodigal Son". It's a moving story that teaches us about God's love for us and his willingness to forgive us no matter what we have done.
