If the author would have just chose one of those and did it well, she would have been much better off. Not to mention, this book, while being Veronica Roth's first try in adult fiction, still very much read like YA. Overall, it was a major miss for me, and after reading 200 pages, I had to quit....more

I read about 50% and then skimmed the rest to finish it. It's insta-love at its worst only times 2 with twin brothers. There's no character development or real story. And the big twist at the end was so stupid and poorly justified that I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. Look I'm not expecting the next great American novel when I pick up books like this, but this was so poorly executed it wasn't even entertaining. M. Leighton certainly can't stand up equally amongst the likes of Samantha Young or J. Lynn. Damn it, it's so hard to find good authors and decently written books in this genre. Frustrating!...more

It sounded like a really cool fairytale remake. Too bad I was tricked. Seriously, this chick couldn't make up her mind on anything and the plot was seriously lacking with all the running around in some crazy-ass labyrinth house. More than anything was how annoyed I got as I quickly lost interest. Too bad some cool elements like the shadow demons and shadow beast went to waste....more

Of course, I've seen the movie. I mean who hasn't? It's epic and everything I love about a good thriller/horror movie. I can't step into a body of water without thinking about sharks--doesn't even matter if it's just a lake. The fear of what's hunting below the murky surface is just a consequence you live with after seeing this movie.
Therefore, for the longest time I've wanted to read the book that started it all. Well, I finally got around to it this weekend while lounging in my shark-free pool. So I took the splash and was left with, wait for it...utter disappointment! The characters were flat, the writing average, and the shark totally benign in comparison to his silver-screen brother.
I never really found myself invested. The third person omniscient view point, something that just isn't used much today, totally bothered me. Seeing the attacks from the point of view of the shark was just crap. What's scary about that? It's the unknown that gets you when it comes to creatures of the deep. When's it gonna bite? Where is it in the water? Is it coming back? How big is it? Unfortunately, the reader gets none of that and frankly, that just isn't right. Spielburg's choice to not show the shark until half way through the movie was a much more dramatic, enticing, and all out scary approach to telling this story. As a result, I give Peter Benchley my regards, but must admit: I'm sorry, Mr. Benchley, but Spielburg did it better.
So get ready, because I don't say this often: The movie was better than the book.(shakes head sadly)...more

I managed to read over half, but every time I picked it up again I just lost more and more interest. So, this one will remain unfinished at 75%. I know that seems like such a waste. I should just finish it, but with a new job, and a lot less time to read now, I refuse to waste my time on a book like this. It wasn't the worst I ever read, but still, there was just too many holes and things that just didn't add up for me. At least it was only 99cents....more

So when I stumbled across this one I was excited to find something different. The premise of some sexy times with the interesting twist of a risque college magazine sounded like fun--a new way to heat up a book. Unfortunately, while the idea was unique the author just couldn't deliver any further than that. The characters fell absolutely flat. The plot was overly fast-paste. Even the steamy photo scenes were written pretty poorly--the idea of them were hotter than what was actually written. At some points I was laughing out loud at how embarrassingly cliche and poorly executed the story was. The best part about this novel was the opening line. It tricked me into thinking this could be something good. What a waste of a good idea!...more

The relationship between Blaire and Rush can't even be called a relationship. There was absolutely no substance to it at all. They barely got to know each other and the first time they actually spend some time together, they're immediately going at it and professing how much they "need" one another. It was just laughable really. I mean sexual tension and physical attraction is great, but as a reader, I needed more than that and Abbi Glines never delivered. Blaire's short admission about her sister just didn't cut it and Rush shared absolutely nothing except his horniness for Blaire. Therefore, the dramatic ending just didn't even seem believable considering all they really shared was a handful of nights sleeping together. I'm sorry, gah! Steamy smut is great, but there's got to be some kind of substance for it to stand upon....more

This book had great potential but at the end of the day its DiVinci Code-esk plot failed and felt more like an advertisement gimic than a good storyline. The writing was far too long winded. Even though sentences were grammatically correct some of them just went on for forever. I also just didn't connect with the characters. The Nora and Adriane relationship didn't seem all that cemented, but more like they tolerated each other because of their connection to Chris. In addition, this story that is meant to be a historical thriller just didn't pack any punch like I'm so familiar with in other historical novels (hem, hem...Dan Brown's novels). I was not at all shocked or excited when the mystery device was revealed. In short, I felt like I gave this book too much of my time and the efforts proved fruitless. I'll stick to my Dan Brown when it comes to hisorical thrillers....more

This was just an awful end to this series. I only gave it two stars because I loved the first two so much. This series should have ended there. I feel like this book was just pointless turmoil thrown at the characters to round off the series into a trilogy. The only thing I found believable in the third book was Alex's initial struggle to get back into the routine of life outside of war. Other than that, the conflict just felt too contrived. Uck. I would recommend to all future readers of this series to stick to the first two and leave it at that. I wish I had....more

The snarky, sadistic personality of Romeo was fun and interesting, but soon afterwards my interest dropped off. The love story was drawn far too quickly and was far too contrived and full of cliches to really have me rooting for them. Outside of that, the plot of mercenaries and ambassadors was too weakly developed to really create a believable, exciting story. Also, the characters were too wishy-washy especially Juliet/Ariel who doesn't make up her mind to the very end. I understand that she's meant to be conflicted, but through her confusions she poses the same questions over and over again that just becomes annoying to the reader. What if Romeo is telling the truth? How can I save Ben's soul when I am in love with him? How can I love Ben when I know there's no future for us? Blah, blah, blah! The ending also seemed way out of left field. I'm not even sure I understood what utimately happened to Romeo. Too weird. In the end, I finished it because it was a short read, but it really didn't interest me in the least. I gave it two stars only because the premise of Shakespeare's tragedy being a lie was clever--too bad the author couldn't deliver....more
