Sylvain Neuvel

Sylvain Neuvel dropped out of high school at age 15. Along the way, he has been a journalist, worked in soil decontamination, sold ice cream in California, and peddled furniture across Canada. He received a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Chicago. He taught linguistics in India, and worked as a software engineer in Montreal. He is also a certified translator, though he wishes he were an astronaut. He likes to tinker, dabbles in robotics and is somewhat obsessed with Halloween. He absolutely loves toys; his girlfriend would have him believe that he has too many, so he writes about aliens and giant robots as a blatant excuse to build action figures (for his son, of course).

Nice !

For those who are missing the Mystery Guy after reading Waking Gods and they-know-what, this is a must read for them. I liked it. I was fond of his tone and this was exactly what I needed.

I won't say what this Lost Themis File is about. Because it would spoil everything.

It's very short and a must-read for Mystery Guy lovers.

This was a free prequel short story to the Themis Files series, and is available online, here: http://www.thethemisfiles.com/File002...

The entire Themis Files series is organised into a series of interviews and this was no exception. This short segment was comprised between our unknown interviewer and the assistant to the president for national security affairs. This was also infused with the same dense scientific logic and wry humour. Whilst not necessary to the series, it was an interesting read and did add a little knowledge to how what occurs after it actually did so, to some extent.

I have told Goodreads peers for years that the recommend button is not for me. I do not know how many electronic files the average person stores but the physical library we have built probably exceeds them. We only buy genres and fill in authors and series we love already. An authoress friend, Heena, got that button through my line of defence in 2016. Upon rereading the synopsis recently, “Sleeping Giants” sounds more fascinating than I recalled.

In a subterranean fall, a girl discovered a metal hand. She became an archaeologist to work on deciphering its mystery. Solving secrets is my line! Then I noticed that Sylvain is Canadian! That is a horse of a different colour. The début “Themis Files” novel went into my next second-hand internet order.

Meanwhile, I saw short stories to whet my appetite of the surreal atmosphere while awaiting the novel’s arrival. A few free PDFs also raise my Canadian book total to 40 before their challenge ended in June. One reader thought that “Themis Files Archive File No. 002” from March 2017, went well after the début novel, published in April 2016. It suited me as an appetizer, acclimatizing me to a reporting writing style I hope I adapt to and simultaneously kept my intrigue high.

This is a 6 page snippet of widely spaced dialogue, establishing government secrecy about the archaeological project, which the NSA wanted to defund. Metaphysical attributes went into a full report that few employees read, who favour itemized summaries. A visitor browsing the full document has the authority to order “National Security Affairs” to maintain the funding. I enjoyed his humour, boldness, and intelligence. I am glad to know going in that the presumed archaeologist heroine, Rose Franklyn, has this authoritative ally to bode well for the good gals!

-Don’t you have anything better to do?
- Not at the moment. Why?
- You come to the White House every couple of weeks. Sometimes you share some information. More often than not you ask for information.
- That is an adequate description of the nature of our relationship.

Story 1 in my 24 Days of Shorts

...

Recommended only to the most hardcore Themis Files fan.

Reading this has taught me that I need to stick to audiobooks with this series, it’s so much better that way.

Plus, I see one of the cardinal sins: “appraised” when he clearly means “apprised.” This short story also contains “artefact “ (twice), “emanate” (three times)*, “gleamy,” and “titivating” (I don’t even know what that’s supposed to be - “decorating,” maybe??) so this clearly wasn’t ready for public consumption. Or is the entire series like that and I just didn’t know because I listened to the audiobook?

* I stand corrected, these were not misspelled words ;-)

An interesting super-short story. It’s kinda fun to get a little more insight into the characters of this really good series.

4/5 stars, a fun little addition but nothing too special

This was a simple little file set before the series begins, and it gives another moment for the reader to connect with the mysterious main character. While it didn't give a lot of context behind the main story besides a hint of something that happened in the book, I still enjoyed this short novella. Other than that, I don't have much to say because there isn't much to it, but it was nice.

3,5/5. Good and always fun to get back into the Themis Files with new material. A very short read and nice add on that the fan will enjoy but it doesn't the story at another level or anything. Fun but non essential!

I have really enjoyed all of the extra Themis Files that give you more information regarding events taking place in novels. This particular file gives you more dialogue from the ever acerbic Mystery Man.

I did not know this was out there, and I am glad I found it.

This short piece gives a sliver of insight into our nameless friend, and how he would arm twist government officials to get things done. In this case, give Rose funding before they met.

After finishing "Waking Gods" and "Only Human", I missed our nameless friend. It was good to see him own it again.

I forgot how much I missed this series until right this second. I think I need to listen to the books again.

If you haven't read the Themis Files series, I highly recommend it. This was a quick read that is sure to suck you in. Seriously, give this series a shot!

I'm choosing not to rate this because I solely read it to get acquainted with the file type of writing style. I'm very intrigued and ready to start Sleeping Giants.

Completely supplemental. Completely bonus. A little short story to enhance the source material.

I feel myself falling down a rabbit hole here.

Brief but engaging, I enjoy a dose of my unnamed man, whom I have named Hugo Weaving (see other books' reviews for explanation) and liked this one for bridging the gap between installments. I do wish I had read it before Waking Gods—although I'm pretty pleased to have read it afterwards, as well.

You'll be perfectly fine if you don't read this with the series, but for those missing the tone and style of the books, it is a nice little bite.
