The Modern Swastika: Fighting Today's anti-Semitism Kindle Edition

Andrew Roberts, an award-winning British historian and a Gentile, writes about the profound debts that Civilization owes to the Jews and the modern world owes to the State of Israel. In this passionate, hard-hitting but meticulously-argued essay, he celebrates Jews, Jewishness and Israel, and investigates the rise of modern anti-Semitism in Europe. The bacillus of anti-Semitism didn't die with Adolf Hitler in 1945, and is today seeing what Roberts regards as an obscene revival across the European continent. Dr Roberts sets out some ways that this repulsive phenomenon can be combatted, and commends several of the heroes and heroines who are on today's front-line in the struggle against this ancient, constantly-mutating Fascist virus. Dr Roberts is - along with Jose-Maria Aznar, Lech Walesa and the late Vaclav Havel - a founder member of The Friends of Israel Initiative, he sits on the academic advisory council of the Canadian Institute for Jewish Research and is the Lehrman Institute's Distinguished Fellow at the New-York Historical Society.

This is a very well written, short discussion or essay on the history and current conditions of anti-semitism and anti-zionism as now being practiced in so very many countries, not just in the Middle East but throughout Europe, and several other parts of the "civilized" world but perhaps to a lesser, obvious extent. The author is an authority on the subject matter, a world-renowned historian and essayist, and writes with full knowledge of the subject matter and its historical context. He is very pro-Israel, and is active in several organizations, worldwide, to combat the modern versions of anti-semitism, which are quite different than those practiced in the previous century, especially before and during WWII throughout Europe and other parts of the battlefields. Anti-semitism today takes the guise of anti-zionism and anti-Israel, and is actively practiced on many campuses and school systems at all levels, across the US and Europe, but less so in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. The book is very well written, well researched, and well conceived, albeit on the shorter side and as a Kindle Edition. It is well worth the asking price, a fairly easy read but also very awakening and convincing in its descriptions of modern anti-semitism and its followers, the anti-semites. Unfortunately, too many Jews by name support such anti-semitism, anti-zionism and, of course, anti-Israelism. They are the self-hating Jews, which exist all around the world, even in Israel, amazingly so. Please do read the book, and then perhaps you will better appreciate why anti-semitism is rising by leaps and bounds all around the world again, today, 2015.

As I read Modern Swastika, I was moved to frustrated anger. As the author points out; there are no logical reasons for Antisemitism and in most cases the flare ups have no real connection with events, real of imagined, controlled by Israel or by Jews.
The author covers the surface facts well but his work in incomplete because when considering any topic about the Jews, one must take into account why they are a different people from all other people on earth. The post-Roman Antisemitism has a specific origin and a reason. The book is also incomplete because it does not outline the outcome for the Jews. May I suggest to readers, as a companion volume: Revelation the Fair God (a free book, all electronic formats at smashwords.com). The author, also non-Jewish and also pro-Israel by conviction covers both subjects in a couple of parenthesis in the text.
One final thought: the worldwide violent Antisemitism of the 20's -- 40's that was a desperate failed attempt at eliminating the Jews altogether before they could access their land and create the state of Israel; could it be that this current wave of universal, irrational Antisemitism is the desperate attempt at keeping the rest of the Jews, worldwide from their promised return to Israel?

Andrew Roberts, is a world renowned historian and biographer. He is a self-described Gentile who is deeply concerned by the reemergence of anti-semitism in Europe and beyond. In this superbly written essay, Roberts summarizes Jewish contributions to the world and relates the growing hatred of Jews and The State of Israel.

He quotes Winston Churchill: "We owe the Jews a system of ethics which, even if it were entirely separated from the supernatural, it would be incomparably the most precious possession of mankind, worth in fact the fruits of all wisdom and learning put together."

After reciting a brief but disturbing litany of acts against Jews because they are Jewish, Roberts declares that Jews and Gentiles must confront these anti-semitic aggressors and expose their lies. Roberts recites statistics that show anti-semitism rising to dangerous levels. He notes that the EU has been unable to agree on a definition of anti-semitism which contributes to his conclusion that the EU is part of the problem and not the solution.

While Roberts succeeds at raising the readers concerns about the level of anti-semitism, he lifts our spirit by his example of being a non-Jew taking on this important cause of defending the children of Abraham.

The book deals with a subject that most, it seems, would rather pretend isn't happening, a sharply increasing level of current anti-Semitism. Written by a non-Jew, it is eye openingly precise and relevant. A page turner.

Excellent essay urging awareness and caution in the face if the growing menace, the rise of antisemitism. mr. Roberts has in this essay described the widespread prevalence of growing antisemitism around the world, but especially in Europe, where there worst expression of it took place less than a century ago. he urges the employment of measures which should be put into place immediately to combat this problem which effects not only jews but the entire future of civilization. As he says in the essay, the choice boils down to civilization or return to barbarism.

This hard hitting essay documents a modern scourge on civilization. It proposes several solutions, but doesn't seem to have any epiphany solution. Perhaps there isn't any. We do need more writers on the subject, so that perhaps a solution will be found.

An essay for our time. Not a grain of popular, anti-islam propaganda, but an intellectual defense of the jewish people and the jewish nation. Thank you to the author for this remarkable booklet.

An eloquent plea for gentiles and Jews to open their eyes to the antisemitism of today. Andrew Roberts names names of both gentiles and Jews who are speaking out. He is one of them.

Astounding new research has shown the tremendous complicity of ordinary folks all over Europe, in Germany, Poland, Hungary and many other countries. One or two resisted and manged to save their Jewish populations...Denmark and I believe Bulgaria and Romania to some extent

5.0 out of 5 stars Lessons from history not being learnt

This essay deserves the highest praise for demonstrating how and why Israel and the Jewish people worldwide deserve our gratitude and respect. Large parts of society seem unable and unwilling to learn the lessons from history, and Andrew Roberts explains and documents clearly and yet succinctly why Israel only trusts itself to defend its right to an existence free from persecution, terror and humiliation. An admirable read: my warmest thanks to Andrew Roberts.(written on the day of the horrifying and despicable attack on the Jewish Museum in Brussels).

An Interesting essay on modern forms of anti semitism and the evils of extremism. The essay highlights how we can ill afford to turn a blind eye to hatred, racism, and extremism in it's new modern form and what will be the consequences if we fail as a generation to stop the spread of radicalisation. All in all an interesting read but i fear it will not be read by the right people ....

5.0 out of 5 stars The best argument for supporting Israel and the Jewish people
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 22, 2014
The Modern Swastika: Fighting Today's anti-Semitism by Andrew Roberts.

I think it is one of the best short accounts of contemporary European anti-Semitism I have come across and especially useful in that it doesn't rely upon a biblical foundation. It is an excellent argument for supporting Israel and the Jewish people and opposing anti-Semitism without pleading biblical or spiritual motives and therefore valuable without the need for Zionist or Christian Zionist pleading.

It should be widely read by all supporters of Israel and equally non-supporters, Christian or not, and certainly by all members of political parties and secular leaders.
