It can be used for decorating your work or for Slipcasting among other things and it can be mixed with mason stains or oxides to add colour. Mason stains can be extremely expensive and you need quite a lot of it to colour the clay. It’s good practice to weigh out the quantities so you’ll know that you’ve added enough and so you’ll be able to replicate the coloured slip accurately. Darker colours like blue and black generally need a lower percentage of mason stain to slip. Of course, it depends on how deep a shade you want. I add between 4-7% blue mason stain to slip to achieve different intensities of colour. Porcelain has lots of organic matter in it, so it does what organic stuff that’s been sitting around for a while does. These are porcelain slip with different coloured mason stains in them from about 2 years ago! They’ve been on a high shelf in my studio for so long they still had ash on the containers from my studio fire 18 months ago 🤦♀️ I didn’t chuck them out cos both porcelain slip and mason stains are super pricey aannnndddd I figured I’d do something with them one day. That day has arrived!
