Trevor Christensen, known by his stage name Said The Sky, is an American electronic dance music producer, DJ and musician.[1] He has been described as a "huge up-and-comer" in the melodic dubstep scene.

Early life

At the age of 8, Christensen went for piano lessons.[2] Speaking in an interview, he said "My mom put me in piano lessons when I was about 8 I think. I honestly hated lessons.[3] I quit after a couple years, but quickly realized I couldn't go a day without sitting down to play. Got back into it in middle school, along with a couple other instruments." He first got into electronic dance music by learning about the production at a Digital Audio Production class in high school.[3]

Christensen uses Ableton to produce music. Previously, he used Logic Pro but said "...I really realized just how illogical Logic was in so many ways".[3] He attended Berklee College Of Music, prior to launching the 'Said The Sky' project.[4] He said "While I was at Berklee, I was taking a lot of beginner/intermediate courses. Music theory, ear training, lessons, etcetera. I never actually made it into their Production program. I learned a lot, but would have gotten more out of it if I'd gone after I'd learned more of the beginning material on my own, and been able to test through those classes".[4]

In 2015, he graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno.[5]

History

2014: Debut extended play

When asked how he was hooked up by Phase Management, Christensen said "I was first introduced to them at Global Dance festival this last summer. I had heard some of the artists under their management and really looked up to them so I knew it was a place I wanted to be. Since they've pulled me under their wing, they've been nothing but supportive and helped push me in a direction I'm comfortable with. They've helped get some of my tunes into ears of artists I've only dreamed of showing my music to someday. Amazing group of people for sure."[3]

On June 8, 2014, he self-released his debut EP "Faith". Tyler Trew of YourEDM reviewed the EP stating "He plays into both of his strengths, utilizing piano heavily throughout his productions in conjunction with superior sound design, most notably in the neuro basses that can be found in all of his singles on Faith. You get the most bass with "Everything" which starts off the EP quite perfectly and ever so celestially; piano and an inspiring vocal speech lead you into what is to come. That being some of the most beautifully epic music you are going to hear."

2015: Singles

On July 9, 2015, Christensen released four singles including two collaborations with Illenium onto iTunes. The singles are "Falling In" (with Illenium featuring Mimi Page), "In Your Wake" (with Illenium featuring Jeza)[6], "Run Away" (featuring Car)[7] and "Book of Us" (featuring Mothica).[8] Speaking about his collaboration and tours with Illenium, Christensen said "Being on tour with him is a dream come true. I never thought that by this time in my life I’d be touring the country with my best friends, playing out music that I love for rooms full of amazing people. I wouldn’t have the first tour in my career any other way".[9]

On July 17, 2015, he released "Espy" as a single and four days later, he released an EP titled "Painted White" with Illenium and Cristina Soto.[10]

On July 30, 2015, he released three singles "Disciple", "For You"[11] and "Everything" where the first two features Melissa Hayes. He released four more singles later in the year, titled "Darling"[12], "Nostalgia"[13], "Listen" and "Mountains". Missio features on "Darling" and "Nostalgia"[14] whereas Diamond Eyes features on "Mountains". "Disciple", "Everything" and "Listen" are singles from his debut EP "Faith".

2016: Collaborations

On January 22, 2016, he released his first single of the year "Ares".[15] In August 2016, it was revealed that Christensen collaborated with Illenium and Seven Lions for a song that was debuted at Das Energi Festival 2016.[16] Christensen has supported Illenium on his headline tour across the United States.[17]

On 30 April 2016, Christensen performed at Denver’s Gothic Theatre, he also toured with Illenium, who also performed at Denver.[18]

On 10 October 2016, he released a single with DJs Illenium and Seven Lions[19][20] titled "Rush Over Me" featuring the vocals of HALIENE.[21][22] The song was first premiered by Illenium during a live show at Das Energi in Salt Lake City, Utah, in August.[23][24][25][26]

On 14 October 2016, he collaborated with fellow DJ 3LAU[27] to release the single "Fire"[28] featuring NÉONHÈART.[29][30] Speaking in an interview, 3LAU said that Christensen sent him a "fantastic piano riff, and (they) built the song out of that".[31] All revenue generated from Christensen's and 3LAU's collaborative single "Fire" will be donated to PoP, a non-profit that builds schools and expands educational opportunities in the developing world.[32][33] The song starts off with a simple piano riff that progresses to include bright and powerful chords, with the vocal cutting through seemingly chaotic sounds in the drop.[34] Its genre is future bass.[35] The song was released via 3LAU's non-profit record label, Blume.[36][37][38] An official music video was uploaded by popular music channel, Proximity, on 14 November 2016 which has garnered over 200,000 views.[39]

On 16 November 2016, Christensen released a remix of The Chainsmokers' second song off their EP "Collage", titled "All We Know".[40] The remix consists of a blend of pleasureful melodies and basslines that provide good vibes.[41] It starts off with guitar-strumming before the vocalist's topline melodies continue[42] combining heavy acoustic elements with inherently catchy melodies.[43]
