Abe Laguna, known by his stage name Ookay, is an American electronic dance music producer, DJ and musician.

Background

San Diego based producer, Ookay exploded onto the 'electronic dance music' scene with a rapidly growing fan base, due in part to his hilarious Twitter persona. His father is a bassist who performed a bass solo during Ookay's Father's Day set at EDC 2015. More recently, Ookay teamed up with electronic music superstar Diplo to remix Avicii’s “You Make Me". With these successes, as well as support from EDM festival "main stage" giants like Tiesto, Steve Aoki, Diplo, Major Lazer, Borgore, Showtek, Chuckie, Knife Party and many more, Ookay had quickly become a 'household' name in the bass music scene.

Out of a desire to branch out and express himself in a completely different genre, Ookay began a side project named “Coaster” that encompasses his love for tech and deep house.

History

2014: Bouncer and debut EP

On 10 March 2014, Showtek and Ookay released a single titled "Bouncer" via Showtek's label Skink Records.[1] An official music video was uploaded by Spinnin' Records' YouTube channel two weeks later.[2]

On 7 November 2014, Ookay released his debut EP "Ghost" via Steve Aoki's label Dim Mak Records.[3] When asked about his inspirations of creating the EP, Ookay said "I really wanted to push the boundaries of my skill. It’s kind of a punch in the shoulder to my fans who get mad when I make anything other than trap. So I made an entire EP that’s pretty much not trap (except Egg Drop Soup). Really trying to convince everyone that i’m not a one-trick-pony".[4]

2016: Thief and SoundCloud

On 25 March 2016, Ookay released a single titled "Thief" on iTunes and many music services.[5] A music video produced by Davin Tjen and directed by Rumena Dinevska, of the song was uploaded onto Ookay's YouTube channel five days later.[6] When asked about when he started working on the song, Ookay said "...a year ago right after I came back from Coachella 2015".[7] As of 19 August 2016, the song peaked at 27th on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Digital Songs chart.[8]

On 3 June 2016, Ookay's SoundCloud page was taken down for multiple copyright violations which was later restored.[9] He expressed his frustrations on Twitter with fellow DJ Deadmau5, who also made negative comments about the music service.[10][11][12]
