Description
The Domhnach Airgid, or Silver Church, a "book shrine" (Cumdach), was believed to have originally contained relics associated with St Patrick. In about 1350 the abbot of Clones, Co. Monaghan, John O Carbry, commissioned a substantial remodelling of the Domhnach Airgid. This remodelling, in the then contemporary Gothic Style made a political point by fusing contemporary feudal ideals with an insistence on the validity of indigenous traditions, in this case, the ministry of Saint Patrick. It is item 48 in A History of Ireland in 100 Objects.
