How It Ends is an American action thriller film directed by David M. Rosenthal and written by Brooks McLaren. The film stars Theo James, Forest Whitaker, Kat Graham, and Mark O'Brien.

The film was released on July 13, 2018 by Netflix.

Plot

The story revolves around Will (Theo James), a lawyer, and his girl-friend Samantha (Sam) (Kat Graham), a couple who are expecting their first child. Will visits Sam's parents in Chicago, Tom (Forest Whitaker) and his wife, with a view to asking permission to marry Sam, while she travels back to Seattle. Tom is a retired US marine who is not on friendly terms with Will. They have dinner during which Tom offers to help Will buy a house. Will and Tom get into an argument and Will leaves, having considered it a bad time to raise the prospect of a wedding. The next day, Will is expecting to travel to Seattle to meet with Sam but while he is on the phone with her he hears an abnormal background voice, and Sam relays to him that something is not right. She tells him that she feels scared before the phone line disconnects. He tries to recall her but phone lines appear to be down. Will goes to Chicago O'Hare airport to depart for his flight to Seattle.

In the airport, all flights are cancelled and a TV news report states that something was set off on the west coast of the United States. During the news report, electricity and phone lines get disrupted. Will takes a cab back to Sam's parents' house, informing them of the situation. F-22 fighter jets fly by. Tom tells Will that he's going to Seattle by car and asks Will if he wants to join. Tom sends his wife to stay with their son.

As they plan to embark on the road trip, Will and Tom make a short stop to fill up on supplies. They are confronted by thieves who try to rob them. Tom uses his gun to deter them and they escape. While on the road they are informed that the interstate highway is closed due to loss of electricity. Tom explains to the soldiers rerouting the cars that he's driving to Seattle to his daughter and acknowledges the risks they might face. While on the highway, they are pulled over by what seems to be a police patrol. Tom realizes that it's a civilian with a shotgun who tries to rob their car. They engage in a firefight and chase which results in knocking out the civilian and Tom fracturing his ribs. They tow their car using the police car and find a nearby garage run by Ricki (Grace Dove). She fixes the car and they offer her $2000 to travel with them in case their car breaks down again. She agrees and they continue their journey.

They encounter a civilian car on the road which ends up in a car accident and gets rolled over. The passengers are found dead. Another car approaches and Tom, Will, and Ricki escape and set off on their way again scavenging for gas and food on the way.

Will decides to make a stop in a nearby town, which is guarded by the local Sheriff (Eric Keenleyside), where his friends Adam and Meg (Kerry Bishé) live. Meg welcomes them to her house and informs them that Adam is in San Francisco. She eventually breaks down to Will and tells him that she feels Adam and Sam are dead.

The trio set out again on the road after resting and resupplying, only to be confronted by a woman who calls for help. Will and Tom are held at gunpoint while robbers steal their supplies. Will chases the car while Ricki shoots out the tires and causes the robbers' car to roll over. They retrieve the stolen gas but the robbers' car catches on fire, killing the robbers. Ricki eventually breaks down on the road and asks for the car to stop. She regrets killing the robbers and informs Tom and Will that she never should have joined them. While Tom and Will rest, she takes her things and disappears.

Will and Tom continue on the road. Tom's lungs collapse and Will performs a needle thorocostomy on him to help him breath. On a bridge, they encounter a gang of armed men on motorcycles who instruct them to pull over. Will successfully drives and dodges their attacks while Tom shoots the assailants and they successfully escape.

Tom eventually succumbs to his wounds and dies. The car also breaks down. Will uses the remaining gas to set Tom and the car ablaze and continues on foot. A car with a family stops by while he's walking near Idaho. They offer him a ride and he shows them the way to his father's house. Will finds it abandonded and decides to give all the supplies in it to the family in exchange for their four wheel drive car.

As Will gets closer to Seattle, he sees that the city is almost completely destroyed. He finds a note left by his wife with an address. He goes to the address and finds Jeremiah (Mark O'Brien) and Sam. They stay in the house and catch up for the night.

Will becomes suspicious of Jeremiah who has been checking out Will's car and acting strangely. Will confronts him and Jeremiah tries to kill Will, only to be shot by Will before he can draw his pistol. A big cloud of smoke and fire starts approaching. As Will gets Sam and starts to drive away from the cloud, the cloud is seen destroying everything in its path. The couple slowly drive north with the engulfing cloud behind them.
