Santa Catarina Island (Portuguese: Ilha de Santa Catarina) is an island in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. It is located on the south coast of Brazil between the south 27° latitude and west 48° longitude. The island is approximately 54 km long (North-South) and 18 km wide (East-West) at its widest point in the north of the island, with a total area of 424.4 km²,

It is the site of the state capital Florianópolis as well as numerous beach resorts, such as Canasvieiras and Cachoeira do Bom Jesus. It is connected to the mainland by three bridges, though one of them (Hercilio Luz Bridge) has been closed since 1991.

Description

The larger part of Florianópolis (97,23%), lies within the borders of Santa Catarina Island. Its downtown part lies in the mid-western region, there being many other neighborhoods and districts which spread along the rest of the island, among them the neighborhoods of Carvoeira, Córrego Grande, Itacorubi, Pantanal, Parque São Jorge, Santa Mônica and Trindade, where the Federal University of Stanta Catarina (UFSC) is located. The neighborhoods of Santo Antônio de Lisboa, Cacupé, Sambaqui, Barra do Sambaqui and Praia da Daniela are located in the northwestern part of the island, while Ingleses, Canasvieiras and Jurerê are in the northern part. Vargem Grande and Vargem Pequena are located farther north.

Barra da Lagoa, Lagoa da Conceição, Rio Tavares and Campeche lie in the eastern part, and the neighborhood of Rio Vermelho lies northwest. Morro das Pedras and Armação do Pântano do Sul lie southeast, while Pântano do Sul and Costa de Dentro lie in the south. Costa de Cima lies mid-south, and Caieira da Barra do Sul and Ribeirão da Ilha are located in the southern part.

The island is the largest of an archipelago containing more than 30 other islands, lying their majority within the district of Florianópolis. Besides those, neighboring islands like Ilha de Anhatomirim, Ilha das Cabras, Ilha do Arvoredo, Ilha Deserta and Ilha Galés, which belong to other municipalities, are also considered part of this archipelago.

Santa Catarina Island is connected to the continent by main three bridges, named Hercílio Luz, Colombo Salles and Pedro Ivo Campos bridge, all laying over a 500 meter-wide and 28 meter-deep cannal. One of the continental neighborhoods in the city is named after this strait, which delimits the South and North bays of the island.
