Commons Admin?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListUsers&limit=500&group=sysop shows you as a Commons Admin: "Seddon (WMF) (A) talk contribs block‏‎ (autopatroller, administrator (until 07:39, 2 December 2022), translation administrator) (Created on 13 April 2012 at 15:50)"

The list of Admins at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:List_of_administrators do not include you but I cannot find your removal from the list. I look at the tally at the bottom every now and then -- and this is the first time in a long while I have seen a discrepancy. Can you shed any light?

Thanks, .     Jim . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 16:55, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jim there is a technical answer which is that my staff account only has the rights temporarily and temporary accounts do not show up on the list.
This is addressed on the page: If 192 is not the last number on this list, there may be an error or there are some users assigned temporarily. Seddon talk 00:49, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. There is no technical reason why temporary accounts shouldn't show up on the list and not having them makes it difficult to check that the list is correct -- at least that it has the right number of people, although, of course, you might have an omission and a false addition. Unless you see a compelling reason not to, I'm going to add you to the list and change the footnote. The other possibility would be to change {{NUMBEROFADMINS}} so it did not include temporary Admins, but that would take some doing. .     Jim . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 14:26, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fine with whatever is best. Your logic here is sound and I have no compelling reason not to be added to that list in some way. I guess it might be worth placing an asterisk next to my staff account in the list just to clarify and note I hold it temporarily. Seddon talk 14:34, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  • Toronto Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! Form 990 mysteries continued ...

@Levivich, Anomie, Kudpung, and BilledMammal: Hi Seddon, I see now where your green quote came from: Expenses incurred for services provided in the United States (for example, telemedicine and services provided over the Internet) that include recipients both inside and outside the United States shouldn't be reported in Part I.

Part I here refers to Part I of Schedule F (Statement of Activities Outside the United States). However, I think that merely means (taking the telemedicine example) that if you provide health advice over the internet via an American website, and you have people abroad using your service, then this does not represent an "Activity Outside the United States" and the expenses you incur in delivering that service don't belong in Schedule F. I don't think this passage refers to non-US employees.

For reference, the two FAQ paragraphs I linked in the RfC discussion were added at a later date by User:SLangan (WMF), after I specifically asked on the mailing list whether contractors listed in Part V 1a were included in the Line 15 salary costs (Risker had claimed they were). See [1], as well as an earlier evasive answer by Maryana Iskander here and the original question here.

There are more unanswered questions here. A particularly interesting comment on that page was (my emphasis):

As we’ve mentioned before in response to this question, using the Form 990 data to calculate an average salary is misleading. It often produces totals that match some of our highest-paid employees. As we will not release non-public salary information in public forums, we accept that the average number is much higher than the true average salary. We hire in over 50 countries and almost 50% of our people are based outside of the US, which is a reflection of our values as a global movement. People are in a wide variety of job types and levels, each of which are paid differently and by location. An average is difficult to calculate and while it may provide a data point, it lacks meaning for evaluating our performance as an organization. As we have shared before, we are in line with other open knowledge organizations (e.g., Mozilla, Creative Commons, EFF) in the financial, salary, budget, and staff information that we publish.

Also, the Wikimedia Foundation has grown since this data – the budget increased in the past year with the addition of more than 200 new people since 2020. This will not continue in the 2022−2023 fiscal year as we stabilize our growth and also ensure that new resources are delivering maximum impact for our mission as per the draft annual plan. SLangan (WMF) (talk) 14:00, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

I read that as them conceding that I was basically on the right track, because if I had been wildly out it would have been easy – and, I thought, advantageous – for them to point out where I had gone wrong. I mean I several times begged them to correct any error in my reasoning.

Of course, they may consider me a complete blabbering idiot not worth correcting.

I suggest we hat the last few exchanges we had in the Village Pump RfC, starting from your "I am not an accountant" to the end of Kudpung's 04:48, 20 November 2022 (UTC) post, and add a hatnote saying "Extended Form 990 discussion, continued on Seddon's talk page" with a link to this here talk page section. Alternatively, if you can think of a better way of doing it, please just go ahead!

Thanks for your help with this. Regards, Andreas JN466 16:20, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm approaching the edge of what I am confident in terms of my own knowledge and understanding but my gut tells me your interpretation is wrong here. I believe that for example, provision of the Wikipedia websites is a service both in the US and globally. So staff supporting this work (engineers) whilst based overseas would not count as activities outside the US because their work is beneficial to those in the US. Compare this for example with a staff member whose work is supporting partnerships in Europe, their work is not directly involved in the provision of the Wikipedia websites, so they would be included in the outside the US activities. Seddon talk 00:51, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Same here. The key questions here are (1) a really simple one – How many people's salary costs are included in the Line 15 total? – and (2) a slightly more involved one: How many full-time employees are they equivalent to? Unfortunately, the WMF wants to keep that info to itself.
However, the quoted statement above – that looking at the Form 990 Line 15 figure would "match some of our highest-paid employees" and result in a "much higher" average – must mean that the Form 990 salary costs data mainly reflects US salaries—because I think it's safe to assume those are highest—and excludes freelancers and people working for contractor firms abroad. But as it is, it's all, sadly, pretty impenetrable. Andreas JN466 00:08, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Not sure why there's an account reverting your changes

What the title says. This account seems to be reverting all your changes to date formats dating from September 2021. I don't know what's up with that. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 22:51, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from CreatrixInspirata (03:07, 5 April 2023)

My edit to the Spades, Indiana article was reverted to its previous state because it was deemed "not constructive." Before I contributed to the article, it was a stub and unhelpful to anyone who wanted to learn a bit about this town. The reversion to its original state appears unhelpful. Can you explain why this occurred? It's discouraging putting the time only to have your effort changed back to a stub article. --CreatrixInspirata (talk) 03:07, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

DYK for Passive Seismic Experiment Package

On 1 June 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Passive Seismic Experiment Package, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Passive Seismic Experiment Package (pictured) recorded one of the first instances of humans littering on another planetary body? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Passive Seismic Experiment Package. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Passive Seismic Experiment Package), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Date format changes

Hello, I'm CLalgo. Thank you for your contributions. I appreciate the effort you made for our project, but unfortunately I had to undo your edit(s) because I believe the article was better before you made that change. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions. The date-format changes you've made go against per MOS:DATEUNIFY: "Dates in article body text should all use the same format". More over, the change to mdy format wasn't on articles with relation to countries that use that format, as MOS:DATETIES demands. If you have any misgivings about my reverts, please reply here. FM promotion

{{FMpromotedUploader|File:Apollo13-wehaveaproblem.ogg}}

I asked a question, but the thread got archived.

I requested a few days ago that Deftones (album) be protected due to a content dispute. So you say it isn't the venue to dispute that. Very well, it may not be, and it seems to have calmed down a bit for the moment, but my question remains: what do you recommend I do in the future when an editor is so persistent and unwilling to discuss before instating disputed content which is skewed to their point of view? Just leave it? Revert it under the definition of vandalism? I always learned that the old version stays, but it doesn't work when they keep pressing beyond 3RR. I knew what I was doing was bad, but I felt I had no choice, and requested the article be protected in order that both me and the user would be forced to discuss the issue before reinstating the questioned content. I simply wanted the edit-earring to stop. I would be happy to ask Mr. Quinlan if you think he would have a better answer for me. dannymusiceditor oops 17:17, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be honest, my inclination was to partial block you both from editing the page outright and to leave the page for others to edit until the two of you can come to some sort of agreement. That remains my inclination. Otherwise if you feel you have exhausted all the other dispute resolution avenues then going to WP:ANI is probably your next destination. If you both continue your pattern of behaviour, someone else is likely to take you both there anyway. Seddon talk 00:19, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the poke, Seddon. I agree with what you've said. @DannyMusicEditor: It's been a few days since Seddon and I both recommended dispute resolution, but the edit warring seems to have continued including less-than-civil edit summaries. The large number of edits that you've made in the midst of a disagreement also raises concerns about ownership of the article.
At this point, I think it would be best if both of you took a break from the article and attempted to bring in a third opinion or start mediation. There's no reason why other editors can't continue to make incremental progress on the article while you attempt to reach consensus with some help. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 01:14, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I really despise using ANI, but if I must I will take that route sooner in the future. I'll be honest, I've never dealt with someone that persistent before. A couple of editors have been helpful at the albums WikiProject giving me links to support what I had learned only through editing experience. dannymusiceditor oops 01:20, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:30, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Happy Adminship Anniversary (#2)

notheme in weather box

I need to know whether to keep the following in a couple of modules I will be updating soon. On 3 April 2023 you added "notheme" to:

Presumably the second edit (to the sandbox) is not wanted? Do you still want the first edit? Don't sweat about it, I just want to know what to do. Johnuniq (talk) 04:38, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Investigation answers the second question because I see that a June 2023 edit to Module:Weather_box/sandbox that I made removed notheme with summary "remove notheme which is now in Module:Weather box/row". I'm therefore guessing you still want notheme in Module:Weather_box/row. Correct? Johnuniq (talk) 04:56, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! Yes the notheme-ing should be permanent in the row. Seddon talk 13:41, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination

@Seddon Sorry to interrupt you but I had to reach out to you here given I don't want to mess up the DYK nomination page with this petty query of mine. I just wanted to know whether the nomination is successful or not. User Rosbif73 made the necessary changes. By the way, please let me know of any future developments and any part I would possibly have to play being the nominator. Regards and yours faithfully, MSincccc (talk) 09:29, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No worries! All is good. I've approved and pinged the DYK admins to see if it can be added to the DYK prep area for Jan 9. Seddon talk 12:21, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon Being an administrator and being familiar with what Wikipedia is and about, would you mind joining the Wikipedia:WikiProject British Royalty/William, Prince of Wales task force whose primary objective is to take William's article to FA status and giving valuable expert advice as such? This is just a formal request and do as you would think would be correct. Regards and yours faithfully, MSincccc (talk) 05:34, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Appreciate the invite! At the moment I have a focus on getting 25 DYK's. I'm probably not the best person to assist as my only FA was one I mostly chaperoned, and it was nearly 15 years ago and things will have moved on. Seddon talk 16:42, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon If you appreciate the invite please join. You need not play an active role neither are we expecting you to necessarily take part in all discussions. But your very presence will be valuable enough. Regards and yours faithfully, MSincccc (talk) 03:47, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for stopping by. Alt3 is nice but unless I am missing something, it is not mentioned in the novel? Can you add the relevant sentence w/ refs? I can't recall which source covered that. TIA! Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:17, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't mentioned in the novel but was mentioned by the author in the "interview" with wired that I used to add a couple of sentences to Counterweight_(novel)#Development. I'll add the citation specifically to the relevant sentence. Seddon talk 08:11, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck!
