Production
In January 2020, GMA Network hired Riot Inc. for the post-production of the series. Toei Company supervised the series, whom later gave an approval through a commendation letter.[48]
Mark A. Reyes was hired as the director of the television series, and has been attached for eight years, from the pitching and approval of the series.[49][50] Noel Layon Flores served as the lead visual designer.[51] Suzette Doctolero was attached as the writer.[1]
GMA Network acquired the rights to make a live-action adaptation through Telesuccess Productions, Toei's Philippine licensee.[52] Voltes V was first broadcast in the Philippines on May 5, 1978, on GMA Network.[53][54]
Production sets had been made for Camp Big Falcon, the Boazanian Skull Ship and the Boazanian Earth underground base. The costumes took a year to produce, undergoing several revisions. Reyes said that they had to establish a "good marriage within the classic Voltes V look and one that's acceptable nowadays" when it comes to the series' visuals, adding that they deviate from using spandex for the costumes.[55]
Production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.[55] Principal photography commenced on May 28, 2021.[49] It was halted in August 2021 due to the enhanced community quarantine in National Capital Region.[56] Filming concluded on April 1, 2023.[57]
Critical response
The media outlet IGN Southeast Asia described Voltes V: Legacy as "the Philippine answer to Power Rangers and Voltron."[58]
Philippine actor and pop culture geek Michael V. said that the series was off to "a good start" but that there were still some things that could be improved. He praised the show's special effects and action sequences, but said that the writing could be stronger and that the characters could be more developed. Overall, he said that he was hopeful for the show's future and that he would continue to watch it.[59]
In a review on Philstar.com, Voltes V: Legacy is the first Filipino movie that could rival Marvel and DC. The film's special effects, action sequences, and story were praised, saying that it is "a must-see for any Filipino who loves superheroes." The cast were commendable, saying that they "brought their A-game" and that they "perfectly embodied their characters." Overall, Voltes V: Legacy is "a great film that is sure to entertain audiences of all ages."[60]
During the first week alone, ‘Voltes V Legacy’ won all its matches in the rating game, against FPJ’s ‘Batang Quiapo’. Nielsen Philippines reported the combined people ratings of the show from four TV channels to be 14.6, 12.7, 13.6, and 12.6, for the first four episodes, respectively. These figures are higher than the 10.7, 11.2, 10.6, and 10.9, posted by FPJ’s Batang Quiapo, on the same days.
Theatrical release
A theatrical version Voltes V: Legacy – The Cinematic Experience, premiered on April 18, 2023, in SM North EDSA, Quezon City.[61] A limited theatrical release was held at SM Cinemas the following day.[62] The 107 minute film covers content from the first 15 episodes of the television series.[63][64] The series made its television debut on GMA Network on May 8, 2023.[65]
