Company history

1980 to 1990

Alltech was founded by biochemist Dr Pearse Lyons in 1980 in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr Lyons was born in Dundalk, Ireland and was educated in University College Dublin and the University of Birmingham, England, where he received a PhD in the Biochemistry of yeast. Working with Irish Distillers, he was involved in the design of its Midleton, Co. Cork facility. In 1980, he founded Alltech and the company began to supply biotechnology-derived ingredients to the livestock and poultry feed industry. The company opened its first international office, in Ireland, in 1981. A year later, in 1982, the company built the North American Bioscience Center in Kentucky. Yea-Sacc 1026, Alltech’s first animal feed additive product, was launched in 1983. In 1988, Alltech UK opened.

1991 to 1999

The company’s first continental European offices opened in Germany and France in 1991. In 1992, the yucca processing plant Industrializadora de Yuca facility was founded in Ciudad Serdan, Puebla, Mexico. Alltech opened its first Asia-Pacific office in Beijing, China in 1994. The Asia-Pacific Bioscience Center, Bangkok opened in 1996. The first North American University Seminar Series was in 1995 and Alltech’s first US regional office opened in New York in 1997. In 1999, the company’s European Bioscience and Marketing Center opened in Dunboyne, Ireland.

2000 to present

Alltech won the AFIA environmental award for the third year in a row in 2000 and was awarded several research grants in the same year by the US Department of Energy. In 2005, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher formally opened the company’s expanded headquarters, which was then 56,000ft2 in size. The same year, Alltech was certified under the AFIA’s Safe Feed Safe Food program.[7] In 2009, the Centre for Animal Nutrigenomics and Applied Animal Nutrition was officially opened in Lexington, Kentucky and expanded its production facilities in both China and Belgium.[8] In 2010, Alltech bought one of the largest algae facilities in the world.

Lyons Farm

The Lyons Farm meat brand was launched in 2012[9] as a partnership between Alltech and Critchfield Meats.[10] The meat is currently available in 150 Ohio and Kentucky restaurants and stores. The poultry line is due to be released in 2012 and other products will be produced in the future. It is also available to buy online.[11]

Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company

In 1999, Dr. Pearse Lyons reopened the Lexington Brewing Company. The company’s first beer was Kentucky Ale, created in 2000 and Kentucky Light was launched in 2003. [12] Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale was launched in 2006.[12] It is matured for six weeks in a bourbon barrel and is available in nine US states, as well as in Ireland and China.[13] In 2011, Lyons launched Town Branch Bourbon, named after the waterway on which Lexington is founded.[13] In the summer of 2012, Irish newspaper The Examiner reported that Alltech will distill a new Irish whiskey at the Carlow Brewing Company. The drink’s name has not yet been released.[14]

Café Citadelle

Alltech’s coffee is a Fair Trade product grown by farmers in Haiti and the profits go to Alltech’s Sustainable Haiti Fund. This fund supports educational and economic development in the country.[15] The green coffee grown in Haiti is roasted by Lexington Coffee & Tea in the US.[16]

Nutrigenomics

One of the core parts of Alltech’s research is nutrigenomics, which focuses on the effect of nutrition on gene expression. In order to further its research, the company opened the Center for Animal Nutrigenomics and Applied Animal Nutrition at its Kentucky headquarters in 2008. This is the first facility of its kind, according to the company.[17]

Awards

Alltech offers internships to undergraduates and graduates, such as the Marketing Internship Program and the Research Internship Program. The Alltech Young Scientist Award is for undergraduate and graduate students worldwide. The Alltech-IFAJ Young Leaders in Agricultural Journalism Award gives winners a scholarship to support their participation at an IFAJ Congress.[18]

Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games

In 2006, Alltech announced that it was to become the first title sponsor of the World Equestrian Games, the biggest sport horse event in the world, for the 2010 games reputedly at a cost of $32m.[19] The company will also be the title sponsor of the 2014 Games, which will be held in Normandy, France.[20]
