He soon became a prolific child actor and – aside his work on Star Trek – guested on series such as The Nanny (starring Daniel Davis), ER (starring Eriq La Salle, with Liz Vassey, Shelly Desai, and Miguel Ferrer), Caroline in the City (starring Lea Thompson and Amy Pietz), Seinfeld (starring Jason Alexander, with Richard Herd, Brian McNamara, and Ian Patrick Williams), and Touched by an Angel (with Jeremy Roberts). Between 1997 and 2000, Dekker co-starred as Nick Szalinszki on Disney's Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show, alongside Barbara Alyn Woods, who played his character's mother. Paul Williams, Larry Cedar, Tom Kenny, Keone Young, Michael Berryman, and Keith Szarabajka were among the guest actors on this show. In 2005, he played a recurring role on 7th Heaven, starring Stephen Collins and Catherine Hicks.
Dekker continued his acting career as an adult, and gained popularity for his recurring role of Zach on NBC's Heroes from 2006 to 2007, a series which starred Santiago Cabrera, Zachary Quinto, and Greg Grunberg and guest starred George Takei and Tina Lifford. He played John Connor in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles from 2008 to 2009; guest-starring on that series were Connor Trinneer, Debra Wilson, Peter Mensah, Patrick Kilpatrick and Bruce Davison.
He also guested on shows such as House (starring Jennifer Morrison), Shark (starring Jeri Ryan, with Michael Buchman Silver), and most recently The Rookie (with Annie Wersching) and The Rookie: Feds (with Richard Jin).
Dekker is also a prolific voice actor and lent his voice to several animated productions. He succeeded Phillip Glasser as the voice of Fievel Mousekewitz in the two direct-to-video sequels to the 1986 and 1991 theatrical films in the American Tail franchise, and voiced Littlefoot in five direct-to-video sequels to the animated film The Land Before Time. He also voiced characters on shows like Men in Black: The Series (with Jennifer Lien, Charles Napier, Ed O'Ross, and Sherman Howard), Extreme Ghostbusters (with Tara Strong, Maurice LaMarche, and Tony Plana), Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy (with Carlos Alazraqui and Haley Joel Osment), and Jackie Chan Adventures.
