The Singularity was a large Borg starship encountered by the Federation in the early 25th century. It was manned by a separate Borg Collective that originated from the assimilation in 2024 of Doctor Agnes Jurati by a Borg Queen from an alternate timeline in which she was the last surviving Borg. This new Collective was founded on the principles of cooperation and assimilating only the willing. (PIC: "Hide and Seek", "Farewell")
History[]
In 2401, the Singularity opened a "hole in spacetime", through which it sent a transmission in multiple languages asking for help from Admiral Jean-Luc Picard along with Article 15, an entreaty to join the Federation. Once Picard arrived on the USS Stargazer and responded to the message, the Singularity emerged. Starfleet subsequently dispatched thirty additional starships as reinforcements for possible hostilities.
The Borg announced that they would send their Queen to negotiate with Picard. Despite Captain Cristóbal Rios' objections, a transporter beam from the Singularity penetrated the Stargazer's shields and materialized the Queen on the bridge. Stating that she first required "power", the Queen began to access the Stargazer's systems, defying all efforts by the crew to stop her. As the Stargazer incorporated components derived from Borg technology, the Queen was able to obtain access codes and compromise the entire Federation fleet.
With seemingly no other options, Picard activated the Stargazer's auto-destruct. Just as the ship exploded, he and his former comrades from SS La Sirena were transported to an alternate timeline by Q. This precipitated a series of events that led to Jurati's assimilation in the past, and the eventual creation of the Singularity itself. (PIC: "The Star Gazer", "Hide and Seek")
After Q returned Picard, Seven of Nine, Raffi Musiker, and Elnor to 2401, moments before the explosion, Picard realized the true identity of the Queen and canceled the auto-destruct. Revealing Jurati's face, the Queen informed her old friends that she had arrived to warn them of an imminent threat: the opening of a massive transwarp conduit that would expel enough energy to destroy most of the sector. With Picard's authorization, the Singularity took control of the Federation fleet and harmonized their shields to form a single barrier, which successfully deflected the energy burst from the conduit. Afterwards, the Queen requested provisional Federation membership so that the Singularity could remain at the mouth of the conduit as a guardian. (PIC: "Farewell")
The name of this ship was given by Dave Blass on his Instagram. [1] He had previously referred to it as a "Borg Singularity Ship". (Dave Blass' Emmy Award solicitation booklet, pp. 50-51)
The Singularity was designed by Blass and John Eaves, and the CGI modeling was done by James Chung. It was 33,200 feet or 6.29 miles (10,159 meters or 10.16 kilometers) in length. [2](X) [3](X)}Regarding the ship's appearance, Blass remarked: "If the Borg could assimilate a Human, a Klingon...what other races could they assimilate, what other biomechanical things had they come across. What would make the scariest incarnation of a Borg vessel? What if the Borg encountered a Doomsday Machine?" He also illustrated how the ship transitioned between its flight and attack modes. [4](X)
