Biogenic material or biomass was any material that was either created by living, or out of a non-living lifeform.
The Borg's interest in assimilating Species 8472 was primarily due to the fact that their technology was biogenically engineered, and was therefore superior to that of all species the Borg had previously encountered. Unfortunately for the Borg, Species 8472 and their technology were genetically similar, and both possessed an incredibly powerful immune system that rendered them completely immune to assimilation.(VOY: "Scorpion")
