CHAPTER III THE NAVY OF THE COMMONWEALTHAND RESTORATION The naval history of the period of 110 years thatelapsed between the accession of James I. and thedeath of Queen Anne may be conveniently dividedinto four periods. The first includes the threeDutch wars, 1651 to 1654, 1665 to 1667, and 1672to 1674. The second, the war with Spain, 1655 to1660, and the war with France, 1689 to 1697.
