Summary
[edit]DescriptionShantinatha Basadi (Rear view), Jinanathapura, Hassan district 07.jpg |
English: Shantinatha Basadi, located in Jinanathapura near Shravanabelagola, Hassan district, Karnataka, is a significant Jain temple dedicated to Lord Shantinatha, the 16th Tirthankara. Constructed in 1200 CE by Rechamayya, the chief commander of Hoysala King Veeraballala Deva, the temple showcases traditional Hoysala architectural style with intricate carvings and finely crafted pillars.
The temple stands on a jagati (platform) which is about a meter in height. The temple comprises a garbhagriha (sanctum), sukhanasi (vestibule), and navaranga (hall). A rare feature is the presence of Jinas, Yakshas, and Yakshis on its outer walls. The 5½-foot statue of Lord Shantinatha inside is flanked by male chauri bearers, while the exterior is adorned with turrets, scrollwork, and panels of Gandharvas playing musical instruments.
