Title: Moments of Representation NumbersComments: Master's dissertationSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
A representation number is a function which expresses the number of ways an integer can be written as a sum of elements of chosen sets. One of the oldest number-theoretic results on representation numbers is Fermat's theorem which says that an odd prime can be written as a sum of two squares in exactly $0$ or $2$ ways (if order of summands is important). In this dissertation, we discuss a selection of methods from modern analytic number theory and apply them to study asymptotics of certain representation numbers. In particular, we work through an argument in the recent paper "The multiplication table constant and sums of two squares" by Granville, Sabuncu and Sedunova to obtain upper bounds on higher moments of the number of ways of writing $n$ as the sum of a square and a square of a prime. We then use the method from the paper to obtain new results on moments of representation numbers where ``prime'' is replaced by ``sum of two squares''.

Title: On Product Formulas of Guillera and SondowComments: 11 pagesSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
In this note, we evaluate a multivariable family of infinite products which generalize Guillera's infinite product for $e$, and Ser's formula (rediscovered by Sondow) for $e^\gamma$. We describe formulas for the products in terms of special values of the Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,u)$ and its $s$ derivative. Additionally, we derive integral and double integral representations for the logarithms of these infinite products.

Title: A functional equation for monomial functionsSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Commutative Algebra (math.AC)
Let $\mathbb{F}\subset \mathbb{K}$ be fields with characteristic zero, $n$ be a positive integer and $\kappa\in \mathbb{K}$. In this paper, we determine those monomials $f\colon \mathbb{F}\to \mathbb{K}$ of degree $n$ for which \[ f(x^{2})= \kappa\cdot x^{n}f(x) \] holds for all $x\in \mathbb{F}$. We show that similar to the classical results, where additive functions were considered, the monomial functions in the equation can be represented with the aid of homomorphisms and higher-order derivations.

Title: Solutions for $k$-generalized Fibonacci numbers using Fuss-Catalan numbersComments: 18 pages, 2 figuresSubjects: Combinatorics (math.CO); Number Theory (math.NT)
We present new expressions for the $k$-generalized Fibonacci numbers, say $F_k(n)$.
They satisfy the recurrence $F_k(n) = F_k(n-1) +\dots+F_k(n-k)$.
Explicit expressions for the roots of the auxiliary (or characteristic) polynomial are presented, using Fuss-Catalan numbers.
Properties of the roots are enumerated.
We quantify the accuracy of asymptotic approximations for $F_k(n)$ for $n\gg1$.
Our results subsume and extend some results published by previous authors.
We also comment on the use of multinomial sums for the $k$-generalized Fibonacci numbers and related sequences.
We also employ the generating function to express $F_k(n)$ as a concise (non-nested) sum of binomial coefficients for arbitrary $k$.
Finally, we present a basis (or `fundamental solutions') to solve the above recurrence for arbitrary initial conditions. - [6] arXiv:2410.08075 (cross-list from math.CO) [pdf, other]

Title: Hall-Littlewood polynomials, affine Schubert series, and lattice enumerationComments: 40 pages and a 3-paged appendix of examplesSubjects: Combinatorics (math.CO); Group Theory (math.GR); Number Theory (math.NT)
We introduce multivariate rational generating series called Hall-Littlewood-Schubert ($\mathsf{HLS}_n$) series. They are defined in terms of polynomials related to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and semistandard Young tableaux. We show that $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series provide solutions to a range of enumeration problems upon judicious substitutions of their variables. These include the problem to enumerate sublattices of a $p$-adic lattice according to the elementary divisor types of their intersections with the members of a complete flag of reference in the ambient lattice. This is an affine analog of the stratification of Grassmannians by Schubert varieties. Other substitutions of $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield new formulae for Hecke series and $p$-adic integrals associated with symplectic $p$-adic groups, and combinatorially defined quiver representation zeta functions. $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series are $q$-analogs of Hilbert series of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with posets arising from parabolic quotients of Coxeter groups of type $\mathsf{B}$ with the Bruhat order. Special values of coarsened $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield analogs of the classical Littlewood identity for the generating functions of Schur polynomials.

Title: Relative Poincar\'e duality in nonarchimedean geometryComments: 127 pages, comments welcomeSubjects: Algebraic Geometry (math.AG); Number Theory (math.NT)
We prove a conjecture of Bhatt-Hansen that derived pushforwards along proper morphisms of rigid-analytic spaces commute with Verdier duality on Zariski-constructible complexes. In particular, this yields duality statements for the intersection cohomology of proper rigid-analytic spaces. In our argument, we construct cycle classes in analytic geometry as well as trace maps for morphisms that are either smooth or proper or finite flat, with appropriate coefficients. As an application of our methods, we obtain new, significantly simplified proofs of $p$-adic Poincaré duality and the preservation of $\mathbf{F}_p$-local systems under smooth proper higher direct images.

Title: Explicit reciprocity laws and Iwasawa theory for modular formsSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
We prove that the Mazur-Tate elements of an eigenform $f$ sit inside the Fitting ideals of the corresponding dual Selmer groups along the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension (up to scaling by a single constant). Our method begins with the construction of local cohomology classes built via the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence. From these classes, we build algebraic analogues of the Mazur-Tate elements which we directly verify sit in the appropriate Fitting ideals. Using Kato's Euler system and explicit reciprocity laws, we prove that these algebraic elements divide the corresponding Mazur-Tate elements, implying our theorem.

Title: On gamma factors of Rankin--Selberg integrals for $\mathrm{U}_{2\ell} \times \mathrm{Res}_{E / F} \mathrm{GL}_n$Comments: revised extensively following the suggestions by the referee, in particular added a proof of Corollary 1.1. Accepted for publication in J. Number TheorySubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
In this paper, we prove the fundamental properties of gamma factors defined by Rankin-Selberg integrals of Shimura type for pairs of generic representations $(\pi, \tau)$ of $\mathrm{U}_{2\ell}(F)$ and $\mathrm{GL}_n(E)$ for a local field $F$ of characteristic zero and a quadratic extension $E$ of $F$. We also prove similar results for pairs of generic representations $(\pi, \tau_1 \times \tau_2)$ of $\mathrm{GL}_{2\ell}(F)$ and $\mathrm{GL}_n(F) \times \mathrm{GL}_n(F)$. As a corollary, we prove that the gamma factors arising from Langlands--Shahidi method and our gamma factors coincide.

Title: On $\mathbb{P}_{Berk}^1$ and Coarse-Grainings of Non-Archimedean Product SpacesSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT); High Energy Physics - Theory (hep-th); Mathematical Physics (math-ph)
We determine the relationship between $\mathbb{C}_p^\times \times \mathbb{C}_p$ and a Berkovich space via an equivalence relation obtained by coarse-graining. This process also establishes a correspondence between $p$-adic fields and Bruhat-Tits trees. From this space, we give a previously unknown construction of the Berkovich projective line $\mathbb{P}_\text{Berk}^1$ and outline a direction for the development of a comprehensive theory of non-Archimedean AdS/CFT and consequently, adelic AdS/CFT, enabled by this construction.

Title: Period-like polynomials for $L$-series associated with half-integral weight cusp formsSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
Given the L-series of a half-integral weight cusp form, we construct a cohomology class with coefficients in a finite dimensional vector space in a way that parallels the Eichler cohomology in the integral weight case. We also define a lift of half-integral weight cusp forms to integral weight modular forms that is compatible with the $L$-series of the respective forms.

Title: Drinfeld Module and Weil pairing over Dedekind domain of class number twoComments: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1308.0855 by other authorsSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
The primary objective of this paper is to derive explicit formulas for rank one and rank two Drinfeld modules over a specific domain denoted by A. This domain corresponds to the projective line associated with an infinite place of degree two. To achieve the goals, we construct a pair of standard Drinfeld modules whose coefficients are in the Hilbert class field of A. We demonstrate that the period lattice of the exponential functions corresponding to both modules behaves similarly to the period lattice of the Carlitz module, the standard rank one Drinfeld module defined over rational function field. Moreover, we employ Andersons t-motive to obtain the complete family of rank two Drinfeld modules. This family is parameterized by the invariant J = \lambda^{q^2+1} which effectively serves as the counterpart of the j-invariant for elliptic curves. Building upon the concepts introduced by van~der~Heiden, particularly with regard to rank two Drinfeld modules, we are able to reformulate the Weil pairing of Drinfeld modules of any rank using a specialized polynomial in multiple variables known as the Weil operator. As an illustrative example, we provide a detailed examination of a more explicit formula for the Weil pairing and the Weil operator of rank two Drinfeld modules over the domain A.

Title: Algorithms for complementary sequencesComments: 13 pages, 2 figuresSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Combinatorics (math.CO)
Finding the n-th positive square number is easy, as it is simply $n^2$. But how do we find the complementary sequence, i.e. the n-th positive nonsquare number? For this case there is an explicit formula. However, for general constraints on a number, this is harder to find. In this paper, we study how to compute the n-th integer that does (or does not) satisfy a certain condition. In particular, we consider it as a fixed point problem, relate it to the iterative method of Lambek and Moser, study a bisection approach to this problem and provide formulas for various complementary sequences such as the non-k-gonal numbers, non-k-gonal pyramidal numbers, non-k-simplex numbers, non-sum-of-k-th powers and non-k-th powers.

Title: On the Diophantine Equations $J_n +J_m =L_k$ and $L_n +L_m =J_k$Subjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
This paper finds all Lucas numbers which are the sum of two Jacobsthal numbers. It also finds all Jacobsthal numbers which are the sum of two Lucas numbers. In general, we find all non-negative integer solutions $(n, m, k)$ of the two Diophantine equations $L_n +L_m =J_k$ and $J_n +J_m =L_K,$ where $\left\lbrace L_{k}\right\rbrace_{k\geq0}$ and $\left\lbrace J_{n}\right\rbrace_{n\geq0}$ are the sequences of Lucas and Jacobsthal numbers, respectively. Our primary results are supported by an adaption of the Baker's theorem for linear forms in logarithms and Dujella and Pethő's reduction method.

Title: Mordell-Tornheim multiple zeta-functions, their integral analogues, and relations among multiple polylogarithmsComments: 30pagesSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
We study the asymptotic behavior of a multiple series of Mordell-Tornheim type and its integral analogue at x=0. Our approach is to show a relation between the multiple series and its integral analogue by using Abel's summation formula, and to deeply investigate the behavior of the integral analogue. Additionally, we establish some nontrivial relations among multiple polylogarithms by comparing two seemingly different asymptotic formulas for the integral analogue.

Title: Ordinary primes in Hilbert modular varietiesComments: Published in 2020 and being arXived at the persuasion of an independent mathematician. With addendum in response to a message in Oct. 2024 from N. KatzJournal-ref: Compos. Math., 156(4), 2020, pp. 647--678Subjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Algebraic Geometry (math.AG)
A well-known conjecture, often attributed to Serre, asserts that any motive over any number field has infinitely many ordinary reductions (in the sense that the Newton polygon coincides with the Hodge polygon). In the case of Hilbert modular cuspforms $f$ of parallel weight $(2, \cdots , 2)$, we show how to produce more ordinary primes by using the Sato-Tate equidistribution and combining it with the Galois theory of the Hecke field. Under the assumption of stronger forms of Sato-Tate equidistribution, we get stronger (but conditional) results. In the case of higher weights, we formulate the ordinariness conjecture for submotives of the intersection cohomology of proper algebraic varieties with motivic coefficients, and verify it for the motives whose $l$-adic Galois realisations are abelian on a finite index subgroup. We get some results for Hilbert cuspforms of weight $(3, \cdots , 3)$, weaker than those for $(2, \cdots , 2)$.

Title: Representations of $GL_n(D)$ near the identityComments: misprints and errors have been corrected. This is the final versionSubjects: Representation Theory (math.RT); Number Theory (math.NT)
For a central division algebra $D$ of dimension $d^2$ over a finite extension $F$ of $\mathbb Q_p$ or of $\mathbb F_p((t))$, a field $R$ of characteristic prime to $p$, and an irreducible smooth $R$-representation $\pi$ of $G=GL_n(D)$, we show that for small enough compact open pro-$p$ subgroup $K$ of $G$, the restriction of $\pi$ to $K$ is the same as that of a virtual representation $\sum c_\pi(\lambda) Ind_{P_\lambda}^G 1$, where the sum is over partitions $\lambda$ of $n$ and $P_\lambda$ a parabolic subgroup of $G$ associated to $\lambda$. When $K$ is a Moy-Prasad subgroup of $G$ we determine from the $c_\pi(\lambda)$ a polynomial $P_{\pi,K}$ of degree $d(\pi)$ independent of the choice of $K$, such that for large enough integers $j$ the dimension of the points of $\pi$ fixed under the congruence subgroup $K_j$ of $K$ is $P_{\pi,K}(q^j)$ where $q$ is the cardinality of the residue field of $D$.

Title: The section conjecture for the toric fundamental group over $p$-adic fieldsComments: A. Tamagawa and Y. Hoshi pointed out to me a mistake in the proof of Proposition 15, so as of now the main results of the preprint are not proved. The general strategy might still work; I am working to try to fix the problemSubjects: Algebraic Geometry (math.AG); Number Theory (math.NT)
The toric fundamental group is the smallest extension of the étale fundamental group which can manage the monodromy of line bundles, in addition to the monodromy of finite étale covers. It is an extension of the étale fundamental group by a projective limit of tori.
We prove the analogue of Grothendieck's section conjecture for the toric fundamental group over finite extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$. - [21] arXiv:2410.04126 (replaced) [pdf, html, other]

Title: Ovoids in the cyclic presentation of PG(3,q)Subjects: Combinatorics (math.CO); Number Theory (math.NT)
We consider the cyclic presentation of $PG(3,q)$ whose points are in the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$ and describe the known ovoids therein. We revisit the set $\mathcal{O}$, consisting of $(q^2+1)$-th roots of unity in $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$, and prove that it forms an elliptic quadric within the cyclic presentation of $PG(3,q)$. Additionally, following the work of Glauberman on Suzuki groups, we offer a new description of Suzuki-Tits ovoids in the cyclic presentation of $PG(3,q)$, characterizing them as the zeroes of a polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$.
